The United States Congress passed the Clean Air Act in 1970, giving the EPA legal authority to regulate pollution from cars and other vehicles. Since then the EPA has been setting limits on the emissions of certain air pollutants, but how successful have these measures been? Ebikes have been growing in popularity and are expected to hit a market value of almost $120billion by 2030. Typical ebikes on the market today feature lithium ion batteries that take about 3 hours to charge and get somewhere around 60 miles of use out of that charge. HydroRide Europe AG has now developed a novel hydrogen-powered ebike that can be refueled in as little as 3 seconds for a 37 mile range. However, even once the hydrogen economy reaches a level of maturity that brings costs down to targeted levels, it will be largely toothless in the fight against climate change without an adequately robust supply of renewable energy. For this reason, we are pleased to observe a major milestone: renewable energy sources are now responsible for creating 30% of global electricity, up from just 19% in 2020. A new hydrogen combustion engine has emerged out of Korea. Kia, Hyundai, and Volvo are involved in the development of a hydrogen combustion engine set to be unveiled to the consumer market by 2025. Hydrogen combustion vehicles will offer similar performance and reliability as diesel trucks but with extremely low emissions, possibly within the "zero emissions" standards set by the European Union. We at ACS believe that a truly green future will require the development of diverse new technologies and, while our recent work has been more closely applicable to hydrogen fuel cell vehicles than to their combustion counterparts, we are excited to see each one of these green tech developments take shape. https://lnkd.in/erHTuP9v

Green Steel Production is Gaining Global Momentum Blast furnaces are responsible for approximately 70% of steel production across the globe, but this production method is also responsible for almost two tons of annual C02 emissions. The steel industry is extremely carbon-intensive, and this is mainly due to the blast furnace process, which involves smelting iron ore with coal-derived coke at high temperatures, releasing CO2 emissions. There is a short-term opportunity to overhaul this industry in favor of greener practices, as about 70% of all steel furnaces worldwide will require relining by 2030. Plants already undergoing maintenance could shift toward a newer model of Direct Reduction of Iron ore systems (DRI) powered by hydrogen, feeding into Electric Arc Furnaces (EAF). If the electricity powering the furnaces is renewably generated, this sector could effectively eliminate all harmful emissions.
