Last week was a big week for Cemex at Climate Week and beyond. I had the privilege of moderating a Cemex sponsored panel on circularity in the Built Environment at #ClimateWeekNYC. It featured some of the foremost authorities on circularity including Bill McDonough, author of the groundbreaking book Cradle to Cradle, and Joe Murphy from the Ellen McArthur Foundation alongside our CEO Fernando Gonzalez. We had an energizing discussion on the role the cement industry can play in repurposing and recycling society's waste. Construction and demolition waste accounts for upwards of 40% of global waste streams while construction itself demands a significant amount of virgen raw materials. On a related note, Fortune Magazine recognized Cemex for its circularity efforts with our inclusion in their prestigious Change the World list for our work with the group VeryNile to clean up the Nile River. Practical evidence of the role the industry can play in a circular economy, repurposing waste streams and cleaning up our oceans and rivers in the process. Finally, I had the opportunity to speak about innovation in our industry at the LeadIt/GCCA event on Decarbonizing Cement and Concrete at the Swedish-American Chamber of Commerce. Innovation is an absolute essential for our industry to achieve our Net Zero goals. The cement industry is unique in bringing industry players together to share innovation and the Global Cement and Concrete Association has been critical in this effort with their Innovandi network which unites startups, industry players and academia on their search for clean tech for the industry. It is encouraging to see so much activity in the startup space but more needs to be done to scale startups and develop innovation funding in the Global South, which, to date has been left out of clean tech development while home to 80% of global cement capacity. So with a wrap on my fourth Climate Week, is it an effective tool to accelerate Climate Action? While at times COP and Climate Week seems like an echo chamber, it does bring like-minded people across industries, governments and multilaterals together to learn and collaborate. But this in no way should substitute for our individual responsibilities to deliver on our sustainability commitments in the rest of the year. In fact, maybe this should be the price of admission. At #ClimateWeekNYC 2024, Cemex hosted a panel with top global experts to discuss how circular economy principles can transform the concrete industry and accelerate the shift towards lower-carbon production.   The panel featured William McDonough, Chief Executive of McDonough Innovation, and one of the leading minds in in sustainable design and the circular economy. McDonough is best known for his pioneering work on Cradle to Cradle, a design philosophy that promotes creating products with the end of their lifecycle in mind. Also on hand was Joe Murphy, Executive Lead at the Ellen MacArthur Foundation, the world’s foremost organization in the global movement toward a circular economy.   Our CEO, Fernando Gonzalez-Olivieri also participated in the panel, where he highlighted the role that the cement industry can play in driving circularity by repurposing demolition and municipal waste in its production process.   Pictured, (L to R) are Fernando, William, and Joe with panel moderator Lucy Rodriguez, Cemex EVP of Investor Relations, Corporate Communications, and Public Affairs.   By committing to reduce the use of virgin raw materials, #Cemex is leading the charge in reimagining how we build. Circularity is not just a trend—it's essential to addressing climate change, preserving biodiversity, and creating a sustainable future for generations to come. ♻️   #CircularEconomy #Sustainability #BuildingABetterFuture
