    Chick quality and livability is largely impacted by hatchery conditions. In a study done by The University of Georgia, hens were fed Termin-8-treated feed or a control diet from 25 -60 weeks of age. The impact of the feed treatment was assessed through hen performance, the microbial load of feed and eggshells, chick quality and livability.     A recent study by Iowa State University showed an ASF outbreak would result in a $79.5 billion impact on the pork and beef industries. It would impact 60,000 industry workers with job loss. Pork prices would drop between 50-60%. It would take three years to recover. ASF can survive for extended periods in pork products and the feed ingredients derived from them.     Wrapping up a week of clean feed with some of Asia's largest swine producers. Yesterday, Dr. Francisco Domingues teamed up with SHS International to discuss feed biosecurity strategies post-ASF outbreak. A recent study simulated the shipping of feed ingredients from Eastern Europe to the US, and scientists proved ASFV survived in feed ingredients for at least 30 days. Other researchers have reported a half-life of the virus in soya-based products ranging between 9.6 and 12.4 days. Enhancing biosecurity and monitoring throughout the production system requires oversight of the ingredients/raw materials that come into feed mills. Producers can help minimize the risk of disease outbreaks and protect animal health by using feed pathogen control solutions and implementing a comprehensive biosecurity program.
