Honoring the Legacy of Joseph Au Kong Weng Last Friday,18 October 2024, I pay tribute to the remarkable life of Joseph Au Kong Weng—lawyer, confidante, and my beloved uncle at Kuantan High Court. Joseph was called to the Bar on January 15, 1975, after reading law at the National University of Singapore and chambering at Allen & Gledhill. He later joined Messrs Au Ah Wah under the mentorship of his father, my grandfather. In 1989, Joseph co-founded Messrs Omar & Joseph Au, where he practiced until the end of his life. Joseph found his calling in personal injury law, where his unwavering dedication ensured his clients always felt supported and heard. His sharp intellect, meticulous attention to detail, and relentless pursuit of justice defined his legal career. On a personal note, Dato’ A Ramanathan, his longest-standing friend, recalls their friendship beginning on opposite sides of a rugby field in 1967 and continuing through law school in Singapore. In court, they were fierce opponents, but their friendship remained grounded in mutual respect. Dato’ Ramanathan fondly remembers Joseph's aggressive courtroom style but also his kindness, generosity, and passion for fast cars and photography. As Dato' Ramanathan aptly said: "I miss his company and banter, but for now a short goodbye, till I catch up again with him." Another dear friend, Dato Bastian Vendargon, captured Joseph’s spirit in a succinct memoir: “Joseph lived with zest and energy. He had a brilliant mind, especially when it came to marshalling facts and appreciating the law. In his earlier years, he practiced criminal and civil law before focusing on tort law. He balanced his career with his passion for fast cars, sports, and adventure.” I had the privilege of working alongside Joseph for a brief time. Despite being my uncle, or perhaps because of it, he was relentless in his pursuit of precision, perception, and dedication in the legal practice. His last words to me were, “James, you can never retire.” As we remember Joseph, we celebrate a life lived with passion and purpose. He will be deeply missed, but never forgotten.
