This Merdeka, I find myself reflecting on the deeper meaning of independence for Malaysia. While we've achieved political sovereignty, our healthcare system's reliance on foreign pharmaceuticals and technologies reveals a lingering vulnerability. In my letter to The Star, I explore how Malaysia can take steps forward—by investing in our own R&D and building a self-reliant pharmaceutical industry. It’s time we ensure that our healthcare system not only serves our people but also embodies the full spirit of our nation’s independence. True independence is not merely the absence of foreign rule but the presence of a strong, self-sustaining nation. It is the courage to build, the wisdom to innovate, and the unyielding will to ensure that Malaysia’s future is crafted by our hands, for our people. Let’s pave the way towards the creation of a civilisation that stands the test of time, together.
