Hunger Knows No Barriers

Perihal kami

Kechara Soup Kitchen (KSK) has been serving marginalised communities in Malaysia for over 13 years; these include the homeless, urban poor and Orang Asli populations. In recent years we have strategically expanded our focus upstream of the poverty curve to reach the urban poor via our Food Bank and Empowerment Programs. These programs aim to provide assistance to the most vulnerable segments of our community, before they fall into complete poverty and hardship.

  • Melaka Hub update **#TeamEffort ⭐️** Let's take a moment to celebrate our incredible Melaka team! Fully operated by dedicated volunteers, they’ve been remarkably independent and consistent in helping those in need. Rain or shine, they've been delivering food to families under their care for years. October is our busiest month at KSK Society, yet the team didn’t hesitate to single-handedly launch our yearly World Food Day campaign, collaborating with local, like-minded entities. Special thanks to Yen Ling, Doubletree by Hilton Melaka, and Planetarium International School Melaka for their recent efforts! While Melaka may be our smallest hub, its impact is anything but small. Each volunteer plays a vital role in our mission, proving the power of kindness and dedication. It’s truly heartwarming to see how they’ve rallied their close networks for donations and support, making a real difference! 🩷 Every one of us is essential to the team, and all efforts—big or small—matter immensely. 🌹 Thank you, everyone, for helping to make the world a better place! 💪

Empowering People to Change Their Lives

Travel with Purpose is Hilton’s Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) strategy to drive responsible travel and tourism globally. Through Travel with Purpose, we aim to create positive environmental and social impacts across our operations, supply chain, and communities. During our annual Travel with Purpose Week at Hilton Kuala Lumpur, we had the privilege of partnering with our long-standing NGO, Kechara Soup Kitchen Society. Together, we made a heartfelt impact on our local community by serving over 720 packed meals and personally delivering them to those in need on the streets. Seeing the smiles and gratitude from those we helped was incredibly moving and reminded us of the importance of giving back. We also joined forces with The Terry Fox Foundation and Cancer Research Malaysia for a meaningful Terry Fox Run and an introduction to "Salsation". The energy and enthusiasm of the participants were truly inspiring. The week culminated in a Pink Hike, where those with energy and passion continued to give back. It was a week filled with compassion, community spirit, and a shared commitment to making a difference. The sense of unity and purpose we felt throughout these activities was truly unforgettable.

In Malaysia, homelessness continues to rise, with countless individuals struggling for basic necessities like food and shelter. In response, the Biocon Malaysia Volunteer Community (BMVC) has teamed up with Kechara Soup Kitchen Society (KSK) for a 'Meals on Wheels' initiative to provide relief to the homeless in Johor.   20 volunteers from BMVC and KSK delivered hot meals and dry food provisions to 85 people. We remain committed to ensuring that no one goes to bed hungry, reaffirming our belief that we can make a better world where food and healthcare are accessible to all. • We were thrilled to be at QSR Brands headquarters last week to formalise a significant partnership that has been in progress since 2019! Our Marketing Director, Justin Cheah, represented KSK Society at the MoA signing ceremony. A huge thank you to KFC Malaysia for supporting the Harvest Project, which transforms surplus food into essential resources for underserved communities. Since 2019, we’ve been collecting surplus food from 30 KFC stores, and we’re excited about expanding this initiative to even more outlets alongside The Lost Food Project. This effort aligns with KFC Add Hope's mission to serve those in need, and we look forward to continuing this meaningful work together! #kecharasoupkitchen #surplusfoodprogramme #ksksociety #foodbank #surplusfood

KFC Malaysia has announced its expansion of participation in the Harvest Project, dedicated to transforming surplus food into vital resources for underserved communities at the MoA signing ceremony recently. In 2019, KFC Malaysia started the partnership with Kechara Soup Kitchen to distribute surplus food from 30 selected stores in the Klang Valley. As of 31st December 2023, it has recorded a total donation of 6,547 kg of food via the Harvest e-log system. In September 2024, the programme is relaunched with 54 stores being selected for the first phase of expansion including outlets outside the Klang Valley, such as KFC Nilai Square, KFC Aeon Tebrau City, and KFC Mid Valley Southkey. These stores collaborated with Kechara Soup Kitchen and The Lost Food Project to ensure regular food donations are made in a safe and timely manner. Just one month’s collection has allowed KFC Malaysia to divert almost 600kg of unsold surplus food benefitting more than 18 charity homes; that is equivalent to 1700 KFC snack plates. The programme is also in line with KFC Add Hope’s continued commitment to supporting underprivileged communities and reducing food waste. To substantiate its commitment, KFC Malaysia has set a target to increase the participation to 80 outlets in 2024, with a goal for each store to donate at least once every month. We remain steadfast in our commitment to meet this target and amplify our impact and aim to triple the surplus food collected by the end of this year, which will be equivalent to 5100 snack plates. #KFCMalaysia #QSRBrands

Tony Gee Malaysia Volunteering Weekend at Kechara Soup Kitchen Society   10 members of our Kuala Lumpur office recently volunteered at the Kechara Soup Kitchen Society, packing food ready to distribute. Throughout the two days, the team helped to hand out approximately 300 packs of food. The packs included hot meals, dry food such as bread, and refreshing drinks.   Tony Gee's pledge to unlock social value funding in association with the Summer of Active Travel initiative also meant that the office was able to donate RM1900 from their efforts in 2023, which will aid Kechara in continuing its invaluable work in the community.   Jiao Yin Lee said: 'participating in this charity activity was a rewarding experience for everyone involved. It allowed the staff to give back to the community and fostered a sense of teamwork and empathy. Seeing the smiles and gratitude was a powerful reminder of the positive impact that collective efforts can achieve.'   At Tony Gee we are committed to making a difference in the community and look forward to more opportunities to contribute to worthy causes like Kechara Soup Kitchen.

We started to brew this during our 2024 kickoff, when our CEO Melvin Tan and Director Eugene Koo shared the mission with us: As we grow as an organisation, I think it's time for us to also give back to the community. Having said that, it means alot to us seeing vision to be actualised into reality - Our utmost pleasure to collaborate with Kechara Soup Kitchen Society for our very first CSR activity in surplus item collection and perishable goods delivery to the children shelters and charity homes⭐ A great thank-you to our team of work buddies for pulling this off together and making a positive impact, regardless big or small, to this community where we live within as a person, and grow within as an organisation. Cheers to many many more getting-on-field-and-sweating-with-smiles kinda community engagements and to all of us here, for being able to give :) Andy Goh Ashwin Retnam Christine Teoh Kim Dee Lai Kylie Phoon Lau Yow Huang Victor Leilani Anna Leon Seth Lydia Alexandria Mae Mahishvaran Dharmananda Steve Yap Winnie Hui Yii Foo Yanusha Marie
