𝗡𝗼𝘁 𝗔𝗹𝗹 𝗠𝗲𝗻 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗠𝗶𝘀𝗮𝗶 (𝗠𝗼𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗲) 𝗜𝘀 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗙𝗮𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿 – And Not All Auditors Are Tax Experts In the tax world, that translates to this: not everyone who talks about tax is qualified to give tax advice. But somehow, I keep hearing it: “𝗠𝘆 𝗮𝘂𝗱𝗶𝘁𝗼𝗿 𝘁𝗼𝗹𝗱 𝗺𝗲…” Just yesterday, a friend of mine shared that her auditor advised her on a tax deduction for commission. The "auditor" suggested my friend issue a payment voucher to Mr. X and then pay herself. My reaction? Eyes wide, head shaking. This is still happening? If this had come from anyone else, I’d probably nod, smile politely, and think, “Well, not my problem.” But since it was a close friend, I couldn’t hold back. “Tell your auditor to go to hell! (叫他去死)” I said, only half-joking. I asked her straight: 𝗪𝗵𝗼 𝗶𝘀 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗮𝘂𝗱𝗶𝘁𝗼𝗿, 𝗮𝗻𝘆𝘄𝗮𝘆? 𝗔𝗻 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻? 𝗝𝘂𝗻𝗶𝗼𝗿? 𝗦𝗲𝗻𝗶𝗼𝗿? 𝗠𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗿? 𝗢𝗿 𝗮 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗻𝗲𝗿? Because let me tell you my past experience, titles don’t guarantee tax wisdom. But here’s the real kicker: 𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝗶𝘀 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗮𝘂𝗱𝗶𝘁𝗼𝗿 – 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗮 𝘁𝗮𝘅 𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗻𝘁 – 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗻 𝗴𝗶𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗮𝗱𝘃𝗶𝗰𝗲? There’s a crucial difference here, one that too many businesses overlook. Just because someone is an auditor doesn’t mean they’re automatically qualified to advise on tax issues. They may know the books inside out, but tax compliance? That’s a specialized field, and it’s why tax agents exist. I also share with my friend that your "auditor" 𝗮 𝗹𝗶𝗰𝗲𝗻𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗮𝘅 𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗶𝗻 𝗠𝗮𝗹𝗮𝘆𝘀𝗶𝗮? 𝗛𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝘀𝗵𝗲 𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗿 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝘁𝘂𝘀 𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗜𝗥𝗕’𝘀 𝗠𝘆𝗖𝘂𝗸𝗮𝗶 𝘀𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺? I warn my friend 𝗜𝗥𝗕 𝗼𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗱𝗼𝗻’𝘁 𝘀𝗶𝘁 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗲𝘀 or guess numbers in a haze of paperwork in today’s digital world. Everything is digitalized, and they know exactly where every ringgit goes. Let me share a quick past story: once, during an audit, an IRB officer pulled out a photocopy of a cheque as evidence. They had a record of the payment down to the last detail. If you think that issuing a quick voucher or taking shortcuts will get past them, you’re in for trouble. A legitimate tax deduction on commissions isn’t about just “issuing a voucher.” It’s about proper documentation, compliance with tax regulations, and making sure the transaction holds up under scrutiny. Fumbling around with vague advice could end up costing you in penalties or even a full-blown tax audit. Increased rates on luxury and non-essential goods. ✅ Service Tax Expansion Covers new B2B services. Effective Date: 1 May 2025. ✅ Sales Tax Exemption for Mastectomy Bras 10% sales tax exemption. Valid from 1 November 2024 to 31 December 2027. ✅ Excise Duty on Sugary Beverages Increased to RM0.40 per liter. Effective from 1 January 2025. ✅ Export Duty on Crude Palm Oil (CPO) Expanded to 10% if price exceeds RM3,451/tonne. Effective from 1 November 2024. ✅ Windfall Profit Levy (WPL) New threshold: RM3,150 (Peninsular), RM3,650 (Sabah/Sarawak). (Tax Update) Malaysia Budget 2025 - New Tax Incentives Malaysia's Budget 2025 introduces exciting tax incentives for businesses ready to modernize and expand. The Smart Logistics Complex (SLC) incentive aims to improve supply chain efficiency by integrating Industry 4.0 technologies. Eligible companies can claim an Investment Tax Allowance (ITA) of 60% on qualifying capital expenditure for five years, applicable to up to 70% of statutory income. To qualify, companies must operate smart warehouses of at least 30,000 square meters and adopt at least three advanced technologies like AI, IoT, or blockchain. Additionally, increased export incentives now include Integrated Circuit (IC) Design services, supporting Malaysia's goal to become a hub for advanced IC design. Effective from YA 2025, this aims to attract investments in high-tech sectors. To be an auditor in Malaysia, you need to learn many rules and standards, like 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗠𝗮𝗹𝗮𝘆𝘀𝗶𝗮 𝗔𝗽𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗱 𝗔𝘂𝗱𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗮𝗿𝗱𝘀, 𝗠𝗣𝗘𝗥𝗦, 𝗠𝗙𝗥𝗦, 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗻𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗔𝗰𝘁 2016, 𝗔𝗰𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝗔𝗰𝘁 1967, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗠𝗜𝗔 𝗕𝘆-𝗟𝗮𝘄. One of the biggest difficulties 𝗶𝘀 𝗸𝗲𝗲𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘂𝗽 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲𝘀. These standards and laws are updated regularly, and it is crucial for auditors to stay informed. Falling behind on these updates can mean that you miss important changes, which can lead to mistakes in audits. This is why auditors need to constantly invest time in learning and staying current with industry changes. Another challenge is dealing with 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝗵𝗲𝗲𝗿 𝘃𝗼𝗹𝘂𝗺𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗱𝗼𝗰𝘂𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻. Auditors need to gather, review, and analyze many different types of documents for each audit. This can be overwhelming, especially when clients are not well-prepared or when documents are missing or incomplete. It requires persistence and a lot of communication to get everything you need. Auditing also involves 𝗮 𝗹𝗼𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗯𝗹𝗲𝗺-𝘀𝗼𝗹𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴. Every client is different, and sometimes the information they provide doesn't fit neatly into the standards. Auditors have to think critically and use their judgment to figure out the best way to handle unique situations while still complying with the rules. This requires not only knowledge but also experience and confidence. On top of that, there is always 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗱𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀. Audits need to be completed within a certain time frame, and there can be unexpected delays that make it even harder. Balancing time while ensuring quality is one of the toughest parts of the job. (Tax Update) Malaysia Budget 2025 - HR Summary Budget 2025 introduces several employment reforms promoting inclusivity and employee support.
