When I first started in the architecture construction industry in Malaysia, I was often the only woman in the room. There were times I had to prove I belonged…. So I had to speak ten times louder to be heard or lace my instructions to with ‘colorful vocab’ in chinese dialect so to blend in with the men peers (That will be story for another day…) But over time, I stopped worrying and focused on how to shape the space itself. Today, I work alongside incredible women in design—women who don’t just create spaces, but redefine how people experience them. I also learnt to design better spaces for women and reinforce the necessity of such to my clients if it is not in their brief. Designing for women isn’t just about functionality—it’s about making them feel truly seen. What we have done so far - 🌿 A nursing nook that isn’t an afterthought. In High Park Residence #Gamudaland, we designed a small, quiet corner for mothers to feed their babies comfortably, just right next to open playgrounds. No fancy materials just where privacy, dignity, and care is integrated into the design. 👜Details like simple hooks and shelf at children height to cater to mothers and toddlers are designed at Sunway Velocity Reading Room with a unique red wall feature. These rounded hooks allow them to hang their large ‘Aunty mummy bags’ and kids’ bags and toddlers and mummies can have some me-time here. 🧘♀️ Wellness spaces that go beyond the gym. Not every woman wants high-intensity workouts. Some want meditation rooms, stretching areas, or places to simply breathe. This is why we design spaces that encourage soft wellness and mindfulness. #sunwayproperties 🎨 Colors, materials, and layouts that support how women move through a space. Design should feel warm, inviting, and safe—without resorting to stereotypes. Women don’t need “pink spaces” to feel included. They need spaces that understand them. 🌸Nevertheless I had also designed some really pink rooms for residential clients and loved the outcome of these. So today, on International Women’s Day, I celebrate the women I work with, the women I design for, and the women who have shaped the way I see the world. ✨ What’s a space that has made YOU feel seen and supported? Inspired by the idea of blending elegant, interactive spaces with contemporary modern touches, we designed and constructed a relaxing haven surrounded by art and nature for a young family to bond and grow together. Garden Manor Sierramas is designed in a modern minimal palette to bring a sense of rejuvenating vibe, while promoting calmness and relaxation. We’ve crafted three distinct spaces to cater to every occasion: • Small Room: Perfect for intimate singalongs, featuring vibrant colors, playful curves, and bold red textures that bring a lively, youthful vibe. • Medium Room: A comfortable space for larger groups, balancing acoustics and aesthetics with cozy velvet padded walls and elegant blue tones. • Karaoke cum Party Room: The highlight of this area and also one of my favourite- a multi-functional space designed for 30 pax private gatherings. This room includes: • A long dining table that seats 14 people for your catered Omakase party. A pantry with fridge and microwave provides convenience • Comfortable sofa seating for relaxation. • A giant screen and state-of-the-art karaoke system with frequently updated songs to keep the party going. 🎨 Design Details: Every room is acoustically treated with padded walls for optimal sound quality, acoustic door and we’ve incorporated calming natural colors, and warm ambience lightings to create a fun yet sophisticated ambiance. Designed for a young family, this home beautifully balances personal retreat spaces and social gathering areas while celebrating the client’s love for art and collectibles. From transforming a challenging layout with overly open zones and lack of storage to creating distinct spaces like a private walk-in wardrobe, hidden hobby room, and vibrant living areas, every detail was meticulously planned. The long corridor became a striking gallery wall with textured finishes, and even the rugs were custom-designed to incorporate organic shapes and bursts of color, blending seamlessly into the neutral ivory and light timber palette. Close collaboration with the client led to solutions that were both functional and artistic. Every wardrobe and cabinet was designed to look like part of the architecture when not in use. The luxurious white marble bathrooms and curated art placement elevate the home into a sophisticated yet warm space. This project reflects the transformative power of thoughtful design and how it can create a harmonious living experience. This space was designed for effortless gatherings—where mornings start over coffee, conversations flow naturally, and every moment feels comfortable yet refined. ✨ The Private Sanctuary – A seamless connection between spaces ensures that privacy never feels isolated. The transition from public to private spaces is marked by an art gallery wall that acts as a curated journey rather than just decoration. ✨ Bringing in Light & Air – Unlike many city homes that feel enclosed, this residence takes advantage of its wrapping balcony, designed for natural cross-ventilation. By embracing abundant natural light and airflow, the home maintains a sense of openness, making every space feel bright, airy, and connected to the outdoors. This project wasn’t about designing to impress—it was about designing for comfort, legacy, and real-life moments. I’ve always believed that community spaces aren’t just about a high-tech gym or a grand hotel-style lobby. It’s about the little spaces—the ones that make daily life easier, more comfortable, and more meaningful. As a 👩⚖️👷♀️female architect, I often think about where mothers and women can truly find a moment of peace. 🧘♀️That’s why the yoga and meditation space at Sunway Velocity Two isn’t just about high technology or flashy features. It’s just soft pastel blues, warm muji tones, and a quiet corner where you can breathe, stretch, and reset. 📁💼And then, there’s the question of where residents of a condo go to work or study. Not everyone fits into a rigid office setup, so we designed the Reading room and co-working Room to support different ways of working—whether you’re a student, a Gen Z freelancer, or a young professional balancing creativity and focus. ✔️ Private WorkPods for deep focus. ✔️ Open collaborative spaces for casual meet-ups. ✔️ Meeting rooms for serious discussions and brainstorming. ✔️Chill beanbag areas And yes even mothers with young children get to enjoy these little spaces. It’s the details, the colors, the lighting that shape how people feel in a space. The way the design adapts to the real needs of the people who use it. The vision for this workspace at Bosch HQ is inspired by the need to integrate work-life experience. We wanted to eschew the traditional corporate office design and move forward with a more contemporary, youthful touch without sacrificing comfort and the well-being of the employees that will be working day-to-day there. We wanted to design a space that will foster a healthy team spirit and embrace the mental wellbeing of employees.
