Happy New Year everyone! Mine has so far been spent largely refereeing between two over-excited young sons 🤣. Here's the first edition of our weekly reports of 2025 tracking the recovery of the Southeast Asian tourism industry. Key developments from the last 2 weeks include: 📰 With the end of the year, FY 2024 and Nov 2024 YTD numbers have started to be announced: Vietnam sees 17.5 mil int'l tourists in 2024, an impressive 39% YoY increase, whilst its domestic tourists were up +2% YoY; Philippines welcomes 6.6 mil int'l tourists from Jan-Dec 2024, but the DOT claim that receipts were +19% vs 2019; and Thailand sees 35 mil until 29 Dec (well short of its initial 2024 target of 40 mil). Meanwhile from Jan-Nov 2024, Malaysia sees 22.5 mil int'l visitors, Singapore 15.1 mil, and Indonesia 12.7 mil - but all three experience MoM declines in their Nov 2024 arrivals. 📰 Year-end travel doesn't disappoint, with Indonesia noting +10% increase in air passengers over the period attributed to the 10% discount on airfares, whilst the TAT forecasts the New Year period to generate 62 bil THB in total tourism revenue, +23% YoY. 📰 Entry to Southeast Asian countries is getting easier from 1 Jan, as Malaysia introduces QR code autogate clearance trial at Kuala Lumpur International Airport, Cambodia reduces its e-visa fee and Thai nationals can use the ThaID app for check in at BKK and DMK airports.
