As such, the company retains its second position in the national automotive sales rankings. Market share for the month is estimated at 20.1% with a YTD figure of 19.1% for the whole of 2024. September is historically a slow month as total industry volume (TIV) fell to a 17-month low. All three SUV models took the lead in September, with the 2025 Proton X70 registering sales of 1,466 units while the Proton X50 and the Proton X90 posting sales of 1,771 units and 217 units respectively. Another model leading its segment for YTD sales is the Proton S70. The C-segment sedan remains the cumulative sales leader for the segment and added 1,013 units to bring its total to 14,768 units in its first full year of sales. PROTON BUSINESS CASE STUDY CHALLENGE 2024 ATTRACTS 300 UNIVERSITY STUDENTS For the first time, PROTON is collaborating with local universities for its Business Case Study Challenge, drawing nearly 300 students from various public and private universities Malaysia. This programme is with the aim of continuously expanding its pool of employees through the Proton Young Talent (PYT) programme. The Challenge is a competition that requires participants to formulate and present the best solution to a business case study within an allocated time frame by utilising data analysis, business judgement and innovation. To kickstart the three-month long challenge that began in September, Dr Li Chunrong, Chief Executive Officer, PROTON led a talk on “The Journey of PROTON’s Revival“ on September 18, attended by 150 students at Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP), which is one of the six universities that participates this round. All six universities, comprising a total of 60 groups of students – including DRB-HICOM University of Automotive Malaysia at Pahang and Universiti Malaya at Kuala Lumpur – were selected based on their strong background in engineering-related courses and their potential contributions to the future of the automotive industry. First place winners from all participating universities will then compete in the grand final, which will be held at Klang Valley in November. To strengthen its position in the country and region, PROTON took a step further when it announced the start of CKD operations for Proton Saga in Egypt earlier this week. The announcement was made at PROTON’s Centre Of Excellence headquarters, which was then followed by a flag off ceremony to send 120 units of left hand drive (LHD) Proton Saga CKD packs to the country. It was witnessed by H.E. Ragai Tawfik Said Nasr, Ambassador of Egypt to Malaysia, and Datuk Hanafi Sakri, Deputy Secretary General (Industry), Ministry of Investment, Trade, and Industry, who were hosted by Tan Sri Syed Faisal Albar, Chairman of PROTON. Overall, close to 17,000 CBU units have been exported to the country with a forecast of over 1,400 units to be shipped there this year. With the local assembly targeted to start in December this year at an assembly plant owned by Ezz Elarab Elsewedy Automotive Factories (ESAF), the targeted volume for 2025 is expected to grow to 5,000 units and in the long term, we are targeting to use Egypt as a regional manufacturing base for sales building in the North African region.
