Two decades ago, a vision for a sustainable future for palm oil was set in motion. Today, on the 20th anniversary of RSPO, we celebrate our incredible journey as a global partnership to make palm oil sustainable. Guided by our world-class Standards and shared values, we have made significant strides in our quest, but the journey continues. Together, we have proven that transformation is possible, and it is collective action that continues to reap positive change. As we mark this milestone, we reflect with pride on the progress we've made and look ahead with renewed determination to shape a better future, as envisioned in that founding year. In the 1950s, Malaysia was home to approximately 3,000 tigers. Sadly, rapid development, agricultural expansion, and hunting have reduced their numbers to fewer than 150 as of 2022. From 2016 to 2020, the National Tiger Survey by the Department of Wildlife and National Parks, WWF-Malaysia, and other NGOs revealed this alarming decline. While unsustainable oil palm production has been one of the contributing factors, the production of RSPO Certified Sustainable Palm Oil (CSPO) aims to mitigate these impacts. RSPO's rigorous standards, including the RSPO Principles and Criteria and the RSPO Independent Smallholder Standard are aimed to halt deforestation by protecting forests, ensure biodiverse ecosystems are preserved, prevent wildfires, and avoid harm to wildlife such as tigers and their habitats. 🐯 #RSPO #InternationalTigerDay #SustainablePalmOil

The palm oil industry has greatly boosted Thailand's economic development, supporting livelihoods for around 400,000 farm households across the nation. Approximately 65% of smallholders employ local labour, fostering positive community impacts and increased incomes. RSPO Standard and Certification empower smallholders to adopt sustainable practices, thereby improving environmental, economic, and social outcomes. This growth has also spurred development across the supply chain, creating employment opportunities and driving economic returns from input businesses to oil palm processing and beyond. RSPO took center stage at last week's IVPA - Indian Vegetable Oil Producers' Association Global Roundtable, driving critical conversations on sustainable palm oil. Ashwin Canakarambedu Selvaraj, RSPO Deputy Director of Market Transformation (India & China), spearheaded a session tackling pressing sustainability risks and championing responsible sourcing in the oil palm industry. The following day, we pushed the dialogue further in our workshop, "Integrating Sustainability in Food Systems Transformation." This dynamic forum confronted the environmental and socio-economic challenges of palm oil cultivation head-on, identifying best practices and carving out pathways for enhanced global collaboration, with a strategic focus on EU-India partnerships. The workshop commenced with RSPO CEO Joseph D’Cruz, and featured presentations from industry leaders such as Debaranjan Pujahari of Sattva Consulting, Dheeraj Talreja of AAK, Sneha M. of IDH, and Dr. Michael Bucki from the EU Delegation to India. #RSPO #SustainablePalmOil #IVPA #India

Wild Asia, an RSPO Member, has been aiding smallholders in implementing sustainable practices on their farms, allowing many independent smallholders and producers to achieve RSPO Certification. Aiming to further advance sustainability, they launched the WAGS Bio programme for certified RSPO Smallholders. This programme focuses on enhancing soil health, plant growth, and yields through regenerative agriculture practices. Farmers are taught to adopt and apply these methods themselves. Technical Advisors at Wild Asia, John Howes and Peter Chang envision making regenerative agriculture the norm within the next 20 years. RSPO is pleased to announce the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the IVPA - Indian Vegetable Oil Producers' Association at the recent IVPA Global RoundTable @3.0. This strategic partnership aims to promote sustainable palm oil cultivation and imports in India through awareness raising, sustainable practice promotion, research initiatives, and policy advocacy. As the world's largest palm oil importer, with annual imports of 9 million tonnes, and one of the largest global consumers, India plays a pivotal role in shaping the palm oil industry's future. RSPO CEO Joseph D’Cruz emphasised India's emerging leadership, stating, "India's dynamic growth positions it as a frontier of sustainable palm oil production in the Asian region." Echoing this sentiment, IVPA President Sudhakar Desai expressed, "This new agreement marks a new chapter of synergy between IVPA and RSPO in ensuring that sustainability is at the core of palm oil production and consumption in India."
