THE LINK BETWEEN YOUR CAREER AND OPERATIONAL EXCELLENCE As a professional, you desire career growth and advancement, You had the discussion with the HR Manager and your supervisor about the possibilities and requirements for promotion within your organization, You were told you need to be in your position for at least 5 years, before you qualify to apply for a promotion. A new colleague joined your team and got promoted within 2 years, Now you feel cheated, you think your manager and HR manager are discriminating against you, How could they possibly tell you one thing and do something completely opposite for the colleague? You ask yourself. You also remember seeing the colleague share a couple of moments of laughter with your manager, Aha, everything is beginning to make sense in to you now, But hear me out, Before you let anger cloud your mind and conclude what might not be true, Before you get yourself entangled in toxic & sticky workplace politics / games, Think for a moment what your colleague could have done which vetoed the standing policies, Did they deliver any unique result? Did they bring about any particular change? Did they solve a particular long standing problem? How did they get that negotiation power to negotiate against the standing policies and rules? Now look beyond your job description, Change something in your department, Improve a particular process and make it faster, Identify a new way of doing things that will save your company cost, Think up ways to address that long standing problem, While doing this, learn how to advocate for yourself in front of the right eyes, Present your achievements to your manager and HR manager with figures in time and money, Come back and tell me if the policy was still the standing rule in your discussions for promotion. Now, that's how you build your negotiation power within any organization. Organizations only recognize value in figures; of course because it is a business after all. Lastly, if your current organization still doesn't put some respect on your figures, use that report to get your next desired position elsewhere.
