About us

The Pacific Community (SPC) is the principal scientific and technical organisation in the Pacific region, proudly supporting development since 1947. We are an international development organisation owned and governed by our 26 country and territory members: American Samoa, Australia, Cook Islands, Federated States of Micronesia, Fiji, France, French Polynesia, Guam, Kiribati, Marshall Islands, Nauru, New Caledonia, New Zealand, Niue, Northern Mariana Islands, Palau, Papua New Guinea, Pitcairn Islands, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tokelau, Tonga, Tuvalu, United States of America, Vanuatu, and Wallis and Futuna. In pursuit of sustainable development to benefit Pacific people, our unique organisation works across more than 25 sectors. SPC is renowned for its knowledge and innovation in such areas as fisheries science, public health surveillance, geoscience and conservation of plant genetic resources for food and agriculture. Much of our focus is on major cross-cutting issues, such as climate change, disaster risk management, food security, gender equality, human rights, non-communicable diseases and youth employment. Using a multi-sector approach in responding to our members’ development priorities, we draw on skills and capabilities from around the region and internationally, and support the empowerment of Pacific communities and sharing of expertise and skills between countries and territories. With over 600 staff, SPC has its headquarters in Noumea, regional offices in Suva and Pohnpei, a country office in Honiara and field staff in other Pacific locations. We are a bilingual organisation, with English and French as our working languages. See www.spc.int

#PacificEducation | Meet Tusigaigoa, a Year 2 student of Palauli Primary School, who benefitted from the Samoa Phonics programme and successfully progressed into Year 3 this year. At the start of Year 2, Tusigaigoa faced difficulties in recognising letter sounds and understanding diacritical marks. Her reading comprehension skills were also below the expected level for her age. However, through the Phonics programme, she not only mastered the art of identifying letter sounds but also became adapt at recognising diacritical marks, a crucial skill in the Samoan language. The Synthetic Systematic Phonics (SSP) programme resumed in Samoa last year, with the aim of improving literacy skills in both local and English language for students in their early years of formal education. 👉 Read more about Phonics: https://bit.ly/3ZW15Lo Read a teacher's testimony: https://bit.ly/3XzSLmU

#PacificAgriculture🌱| Kiribati is a step closer to expanding its pool of certified paravets with today’s wrap-up of the #paravet summer school. This milestone marks 14 years since the first group of certified paravets graduated in 2010! 📓 The summer school is the culmination of the extensive paravet training programme aimed at equipping aspiring paravets – also known as #AnimalHealth and production officers- with essential knowledge and skills in animal health care and production. Paravet trainees, including extension officers, biosecurity officers, stockmen, and livestock officers from the #Kiribati Ministry of Environment, Lands and Agriculture Development have been engaged in a week-long practical and theory revision sessions in preparation for final examination. 🐖🐔The practical sessions encompassed thorough fieldwork on safe handling, clinical diagnosis, treatment and sampling of pigs and chickens. Paravets play a crucial role as the eyes and ears of veterinarians in many Pacific countries, providing basic care and production advice to their farming communities where there are few or no veterinarians. ✅ Having qualified paravets in-country ensures that Kiribati has the necessary expertise to protect its animal and livestock industry, safeguarding the entry and spread of serious animal diseases. 🤝 The training is organised by the Pacific Community-SPC through the European Union in the Pacific-funded Safe Agricultural trade Facilitation through Economic integration in the Pacific (SAFE Pacific) project, in partnership with the Australian Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (DAFF). ℹ️ SAFE Pacific provides targeted assistance to support small Pacific Island countries in increasing export capacity and improving economic growth. Through this work, the initiative helps protect local industries and the agriculture sector from exotic and invasive threats.

#15thTriennialConference | “Stand up and move forward... together we can – all the droplets are equally important,” explained Senator Daisy Alik-Momotaro. She was translating the words of women including leroij (women chiefs) of the Marshall Islands as they sang their farewells at the closing of the 15th Triennial Conference of Pacific Women. Alluding to the event’s theme, An Piliñliñ Koba Kōṃṃan Lọmeto (each droplet of water forming the ocean) the joyful verse encouraged attendees – in Majuro 🇲🇭 and beyond – to be united and as strong as the ocean itself.    ℹ️ Read more: https://bit.ly/3LJEKf3 👉 The 15th Triennial Conference of Pacific Women ended yesterday, with the 8th Meeting of Pacific Ministers for Women taking place today and the Pacific Islands Forum Women Leaders Meeting tomorrow. ℹ️ For more information about the conference, visit: https://bit.ly/3R9bxgO
