Hezbollah confirmed on Saturday that its leader Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah was killed in the Israeli air strikes targeting the militant group's command headquarters a day earlier in Dahieh, Beirut's southern suburbs.
Israeli air strikes Friday afternoon knocked out six buildings in Beirut's southern suburb of Haret Hreik, the largest strike in the Lebanese capital in nearly a year of fighting between Israel and Hezbollah, according to an AP report.
The Israeli military said the strike, which killed and wounded dozens of people, hit the headquarters of Hezbollah in Beirut, the AP report added.
IDF also claimed that the commander of Hezbollah's Southern Front, Ali Karaki, was killed, among other commanders.
"Yesterday (Friday), Israel killed Hassan Nasrallah, the leader of the Hezbollah terrorist organization and one of its founders, along with Ali Kar Karaki, a senior commander of Hezbollah's southern front, and other Hezbollah commanders," the statement read.
Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei on Saturday vowed support for Hezbollah and called on Muslims to confront Israel.
"All the resistance forces of the region are with Hezbollah and support it," the supreme leader said, according to state media, citing a statement issued after the Israeli army said it had killed Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah.
"The fate of this region will be determined by the forces of resistance, with Hezbollah at the forefront," the statement added.
