As I shared during our recent debate at the Annual Retreat of Alles Charis , Nigeria presents a vast opportunity for LPG growth. With a population of over 223 million, Nigeria is the largest market in West Africa, accounting for approximately 40% of the region's LPG consumption (Source: "Nigeria LPG Market Outlook to 2026" by ResearchAndMarkets). However, despite being a sizeable LPG exporter, Nigeria's domestic consumption is largely import-dependent. According to the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA), in 2023, Nigeria consumed approximately 1.4 million metric tons (Mt) of LPG, with a staggering 60% (800,000 Mt) imported (Source: NMDPRA's 2023 Annual Report). This import gap presents a significant opportunity for domestic players like Alles Charis Gas Limited to thrive. By optimizing our processes, investing in local infrastructure, and promoting the adoption of LPG as a cleaner energy source, we can reduce Nigeria's reliance on imports and drive economic growth. As highlighted in the International Energy Agency (IEA) "Africa Energy Outlook 2022", LPG can play a crucial role in Africa's energy transition, particularly in the cooking sector. By promoting the use of LPG, we can improve energy access, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and enhance economic development.
