14 years ago, during my investment banking training at J.P. Morgan in New York, the new graduates had the opportunity to meet with the legendary Jamie Dimon. Jamie Dimon is one of the longest serving bank CEOs, at the helm of J.P. Morgan since 2006 and has grown AUM to over $3 trillion. He is a role model of mine and a walking masterclass in leadership and consistency in excellence. Nevertheless, I mustered up the courage to ask the great Jamie Dimon, a question. Having seen and experienced the incredible investment opportunity Africa presents during my time at TLG Capital, I asked him about his views on investing in Africa and his expansion strategy for the continent. I was curious about his thoughts on taking advantage of the immense potential for economic growth on the continent and providing the full suite of banking services to the growing population. His response then was conservative and cautious —taking a "wait and see" approach. I remember leaving the room determined to one day showcase the immense potential that Africa holds. 9 years later after this encounter, I mustered up the courage again to take the risk and embark on the journey of running and managing my own fund which is Aruwa Capital Management today. With 10 investments in critical sectors of the economy, financial returns from Fund I beating global, European and African benchmarks, whilst supporting over 175,000 jobs, we've shown what’s possible when you bet on Nigeria and Africa as a long term investor. Yesterday, in a full-circle moment for me after 14 years, I see Jamie Dimon again—this time at the Nigerian Economic Summit Group (NESG) conference in, Nigeria, my home country where i now reside with my family. It was a very happy moment indeed for me to remind him of this encounter and tell him about Aruwa Capital Management. Climate Action Meets Gender-Lens Investing in Africa At Aruwa Capital Management, we recognise that addressing climate change in Africa goes hand in hand with closing the gender gap. The impacts of climate change disproportionately affect women, who are often at the forefront of managing household resources. Yet, women remain underrepresented in climate-focused solutions and investments. Through our gender-lens investment strategy, we are uniquely positioned to bridge this gap. One of our portfolio companies, Koolboks, is a prime example of how innovative solutions can provide both climate resilience and gender-inclusive impact. Koolboks offers solar-powered refrigeration solutions to off-grid communities across Africa, directly addressing food preservation challenges while empowering women entrepreneurs who can now store and sell products that would otherwise perish. Koolboks, has made significant strides in fostering sustainable development and social impact, particularly in promoting gender equality. Over 700 million Africans lack access to electricity, and through its solar-powered freezers, Koolboks is providing clean cooling solutions to low- to middle-income populations facing rising energy costs. By providing these solar-enabled cooling solutions to underserved communities, Koolboks supports women retailers, who make up 73% of its customer base, while contributing to environmental sustainability.
