Treasury bills, or T-bills, are short-term government debt securities issued by the Debt Management Office (DMO). They offer a secure investment option with a maturity period of 7 days to 364 days. When an investor purchases a T-bill, the interest is paid upfront, and the investor pays the discounted value. Who Can Invest? Investment in Treasury Bills is open to Individuals, Small Businesses, Associations and Unions, Religious Bodies, Educational Institutions, Corporate entities, Governments, etc. Everyone can invest in Treasury Bills. How Can I Purchase Treasury Bills? Interested investors can either purchase Treasury Bills via the Nigerian Treasury Bills Primary Market Auction or via the secondary market, both through FCMB. See the detailed process flow below: • To purchase treasury bills via the primary market auction, the investor must either write an instruction or complete the NTB tender form, submit it at any FCMB branch, or send it to their account officer. • To purchase treasury bills via the Secondary Market, the investor must either write an instruction or complete the NTB tender form, submit it at any FCMB branch, or send it to their account officer. The account officer/customer service officer then sends the signature verified instruction/tender to treasurybills@fcmb.com between 10 am and 2 pm, the daily cut-off time. Note: The Nigerian Treasury bills Secondary market is available daily with a 2 pm cut-off time. • The documentary requirement for an investor to purchase treasury bills either via the primary market auction or the secondary market is a written letter instructing CSLS to bid on their behalf. • The investor's account must be fully funded for the investment sum before the request is accepted (minimum of N100, 000.00). What Are The Benefits To Investors? ~ It offers stable returns. ~ Investment qualifies as a liquid asset for visa applications. ~ Investment qualifies as collateral for borrowing. ~ Interest is paid upfront. ~ Investment can be re-discounted before maturity whenever the need arises. What are the Risk Elements an Investor Should Be Aware Of? Nigerian Treasury Bills are backed by the “full faith and credit” of the Federal Government of Nigeria. It is usually considered risk-free as the FGN guarantees it. Can I Liquidate a Treasury bill Investment before the Maturity Date? Yes, treasury bills can be re-discounted via the secondary market at the prevailing rate. Are There Additional Charges? Yes, a Custody fee is charged in line with CBN's approved guideline on transferring all nonproprietary assets to a licensed custodian (0.15% of the face value for the tenor). How Will I Receive My Money Upon Maturity Of The Investment? At maturity, the investor will receive the full payment through direct credit to the account from which the investment sum was debited.
