Earlier this week, my #Climate #Change and #Sustainable #Development essay was judged best out of over 3000 essays submitted in #Enugu State. The statewide competition, organized by the office of the #Senior #Adviser to the Governor on Climate Change in partnership with the office of the First Lady of Enugu State and the Enugu State Ministries of #Environment and #Climate #Change, #Education, #Youths and #Sports, aimed at harnessing the state's youthful potential in addressing climate issues. In the essay topic: " What measures can Enugu State take to address climate change while also promoting economic growth, and what role can the youth play in this process?" I posit the importance of a youthful transition from #activism to #professionalism. It is this intersection between activism and professionalism that would lead to sustainable development. Though climate change issues today are a global challenge, we must localize our actions in other to #mitigate and #adapt to its adverse effects. #Education and #skills are some of the leverages social media and #technology have offered the youths today, hence Enugu youths should not be mere spectators in this new era. (drop your email for the full essay). This day served as one of my most elated days when my work in #sustainability and sustainable development was recognized. While thanking Prof Chukwumerije Okereke and his team for this prestigious recognition, I earnestly call on all Enugu Youths to roll up our sleeves and join hands with His Excellency Peter Ndubuisi Mbah in restoring the glory of the #Coal #City state. Last week we opened the doors of our latest zero carbon recycling center at Abraham Adesanya Junction, Ajah - marking a significant milestone in our mission to revolutionize waste management in Lagos! 🌱 We were honored to welcome climate activists, development partners, and community members who witnessed our innovative circular economy approach in action. From our solar-powered machinery to our end-to-end waste transformation process, visitors experienced firsthand how we're turning waste into value. This launch, coinciding with International Day of Climate Action, represents another step toward addressing Lagos' waste management challenges. With less than 8% of Lagos' 13,000-15,000 metric tonnes of daily waste currently being recycled, every new facility brings us closer to our vision of a cleaner, safer communities with stable and dignified jobs for community members. ♻️ Couldn't make it to the launch? The opening of GIVO’s Ajah center on International Day of Climate Action truly highlights their commitment to serving the community and driving sustainable change. GIVO is addressing critical waste management challenges while creating economic opportunities for local residents in Lagos. Witnessing their creativity firsthand was inspiring. I saw how our plastics are recycled and transformed into new products, imagine being able to dispose of plastic and earn from it! Who wouldn’t want to turn trash into cash? I'm inspired by the incredible turnout at the launch of our newest GIVO Africa zero-carbon #recycling hub at Abraham Adesanya, Ajah. Seeing climate activists, development partners, corporate stakeholders, and most importantly, our wonderful community members come together filled me with immense gratitude. Watching our team showcase our solar-powered machinery and innovative waste-to-value process, and witnessing the enthusiasm from attendees reminded me why we started this journey - to revolutionize waste management in Nigeria while creating sustainable economic opportunities for our communities.
