Every picture here tells a story of faith, passion, resilience, and audacity. When I was posted to the Middle Belt of Nigeria for my NYSC (National Youth Service Corps), I served in a rural area where I noticed some heartbreaking trends. Young girls and teenagers were either pregnant or already married. And in many cases, education seemed irrelevant to the youth; nearly 95% showed little to no interest in school. As I connected with female students, I uncovered something even more troubling. Many of these girls were being taken advantage of sometimes by teachers or even fellow corps members who were meant to be role models. I realized the real issue was rooted in ignorance and a mindset shaped by culture and environment. It wasn’t just a lack of resources; it was a lack of awareness. I couldn’t just stand by. I felt a strong call to do something, so I took it upon myself to lead a personal community development project focused on two crucial areas: sex education and the value of education itself. You can see it in the first two pictures ( I couldn't snap many pictures 😞) moments spent educating these students, helping them understand the power of saying “no” and choosing their own path. With consistent sessions, change began to bloom. Students who once lacked direction began to set goals, saying no to advances and prioritizing their education. Their mindsets shifted as they saw education as a path to freedom and opportunity. Before leaving, two years later, I witnessed remarkable changes. Many of the students I worked with gained admission to higher institutions and left with visions and goals that stretched beyond their hometown. Two years have passed, and I still receive calls from some of them, a reminder that our impact can ripple forward. In the next 3 photos, I'm teaching the students how to bake. Organized by fellow corps members, this initiative aimed to equip them with practical skills and a sense of self-worth. Some of my own students from my baking academy, who were also serving as corps members, joined in to make this experience meaningful for all involved. It was rewarding to see these students gain confidence and new skills. So here’s what I’d like to say: wherever you find yourself, village or city be a positive force. Don’t just blend in or ignore the challenges. Identify a gap or problem and be a solution. Invest in lives, because the greatest investment you can make, after investing in yourself, is investing in others. Let’s work together to make the world a better place, one impact at a time. Happy Throwback Tuesday! I’m grateful to God for these memories and the chance to make a difference. PS: other pictures are pictures of my onsite students who are corpers, some of their practicals, a baking book written by me. PS.S: I'm really feeling emotional right now 😅😅 Gloria Dove ♥️ #education #sexeducation #sdgs
