The Benefits of Rest on Mental Health In today’s fast-paced world, rest is often treated as a luxury rather than a necessity. But when it comes to mental health, taking time to rest is one of the most vital things you can do. It’s more than just sleep—rest includes downtime, relaxation, and moments where you allow your mind to pause. Here is how rest can positively affect your mental health: 1. Reduces Stress and Anxiety When we rest, we give our brain a break from constant stimulation. This downtime helps reduce cortisol levels, the hormone responsible for stress. Whether it’s taking a nap, meditating, or simply stepping away from the chaos, moments of rest allow our bodies and minds to reset, lowering feelings of anxiety. 2. Improves Mood and Emotional Balance Rest doesn’t just help physically—it boosts emotional well-being too. When you’re well-rested, you’re more equipped to handle life’s ups and downs. It gives you the mental clarity to process emotions rather than react impulsively. A well-rested mind is less irritable, more patient, and able to experience joy more fully. 3. Enhances Cognitive Function A rested brain is a sharper brain. Without adequate rest, our ability to focus, make decisions, and solve problems starts to slip. Regular rest helps improve concentration, creativity, and mental clarity. Essentially, taking a break makes you more productive in the long run. 4. Prevents Burnout Burnout happens when we push ourselves too hard for too long without enough recovery. Regular rest can prevent this by giving your mind a chance to recharge. It’s like hitting the reset button, so you don’t end up feeling overwhelmed or mentally drained. In a nutshell, rest isn’t a sign of laziness—it’s essential for mental health. Taking time to slow down, whether it’s through sleep, mindfulness, or even a walk in nature, is one of the best ways to nurture your mind and keep stress at bay. So, next time you feel guilty for taking a break, remember: it’s not a waste of time—it’s an investment in your well-being. And when you are struggling with your mental health and in need of support, the LagosMinD helpline is available 24/7, our team of counsellors are ready to offer you guidance and support.

Differences Between Mental Health and Mental Disorder Before we look at the differences between Mental Health and Mental Disorders, we need to have some basic knowledge of each of them. What Is Mental Health? Mental Health can be described as the social, emotional, and psychological well-being of an individual. The World Health Organization (WHO) describes a person with “good” mental health as someone capable of: * Effectively coping with stressors * Earning and working well * Contributing to their community. Good mental health makes you happy, live a balanced life and make good choices. What is Mental Disorder? Mental Disorder: Mental disorder can also mean mental illness or psychiatric disorder. This is a condition that affects a person’s feelings, behaviour and mood. Mental illnesses complicate mental Health by affecting the way a person feels, thinks, acts or experiences the world. Differences between Mental Health and Mental Disorder. * Mental Health refers to general psychological and emotional wellbeing while Mental disorders are health problems that impact how a person’s brain functions. * Everybody has Mental Health whereas not everyone has Mental Disorders. * Mental health includes psychological and emotional well-being, while mental disorders include conditions like depression, anxiety, and emotional trauma. * Mental health is normal, mental disorders are abnormal. * An individual is considered mentally well when they experience healthy thoughts and feelings, whereas a mental disorder is characterized by unhealthy thoughts and feelings. * Mental health is about thriving, while mental illness is about struggling. Prioritize your mental well-being, but if you are struggling with your mental health or any mental disorders arise, don’t face them alone – reach out to LagosMiND through our 24/7 helpline (09090006463) or any of our other platforms.
