The Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare Dr. Tunji Alausa recently declared Cancer a notifiable disease in Nigeria and has unveiled the National guidelines for cancer registries in Nigeria. A notifiable disease is a disease that, when diagnosed, requires health providers (usually by law) to report to state or local public health officials. Notifiable diseases are of public interest because of their contagiousness, severity or frequency, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention We are grateful for such impressive declaration as this is an evidence of the immense work by organisations such as the National Institute for Cancer Research and Treatment (NICRAT) and Nigerian Cancer Society and all cancer organisations and advocates We believe these strides are set to led to progress in our fight against cancer.
