The Nigerian government is exploring partnerships with international oil giants, Chevron and ExxonMobil, in a bid to alleviate the persistent cooking gas shortages and soaring prices. Farouk Ahmed, chief executive officer of the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA), said this strategic move aims to bolster the domestic gas supply and provide much-needed relief to Nigerian households. “We have been engaging stakeholders on the domestication of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) produced in-country by producers, especially Chevron Nigeria Limited (CNL) and Mobil Producing Nigeria (MPN), similar to Nigerian Liquified Natural Gas (NLNG) which has domesticated 100 percent of its Butane production since the year 2022,” Ahmed said at 2024 OTL Africa Downstream Energy Week in Lagos. President Bola Tinubu says Nigerian motorists can now purchase a litre of Premium Motor Spirit, also known as petrol, at N1,000 per litre. The president also noted that the equivalent of a litre of petrol, which is a Standard Cubic Meter of Compressed Natural Gas, can be had for N200. Tinubu said this when he met with the executives of the Nigerian Independent Petroleum Company, led by the director, Mr Ramesh Kasangra, at the State House in Abuja Tuesday, according to a statement issued by the president’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, titled, “President Tinubu meets NIPCO executives, commends investments in the CNG sector.” “Nigeria’s motorists can buy petrol at N1,000 per litre or equivalent gas per Standard Cubic Meter at N200. We have also introduced incentives for commercial motorists to convert from petrol to gas” free of cost,” Tinubu said. The statement read partly, “The President commended NIPCO’s contributions to the nation’s energy transition efforts, particularly its support for the Presidential Compressed Natural Gas Initiative (PCNGI). “During the meeting, President Tinubu acknowledged NIPCO’s role as a critical player in enhancing the adoption of CNG as an alternative fuel, noting that such investments align with his administration’s energy security and economic diversification strategy. “He emphasised the importance of public-private partnerships in driving the transition to cleaner and more affordable energy solutions for Nigerians. Tinubu noted that the PCNGI has helped reduce Nigeria’s “reliance on petrol and cut down fuel costs for consumers, adding that the CNG, being a cleaner and more affordable fuel, reduces the carbon footprint and saves lives. Oil and gas companies are preparing to spend 60 percent more on fossil fuel exploration, according to data and industry executives. Analysts at Wood Mackenzie, a global oil sector consultancy, found that investments in oil and gas among the 23 biggest producers in the world are set to climb by over 60 percent by next year, compared to the trough of 2020 and the pandemic lockdowns. “The main driver has been the dawning realisation that the transition is unfolding more slowly than expected, implying that oil and gas demand may be stronger for longer,” Wood Mackenzie’s analysts said. It further said, “EuroMajors are looking to plug production and cash flow gaps by investing more upstream. US Majors and some Emerging Majors have already used M&A to expand and extend upstream exposure. We expect more sector consolidation to come in 2025.” Credit: BusinessDay Nigeria #oilandgas #oilandgascompanies #fossilfuels #oilandgasindustry #businessday

CNG (Compressed Natural Gas) is quickly becoming the future of fuel in Nigeria, and here’s why: - Cost-effectiveness – CNG is much cheaper than petrol, providing an affordable alternative for both businesses and everyday drivers. With the rising cost of petrol, CNG offers a more budget-friendly solution. - Energy independence – Nigeria has abundant natural gas reserves, which means CNG reduces the country’s reliance on imported fuels, promoting energy independence and boosting the local economy. - Environmental benefits – CNG produces fewer harmful emissions than petrol or diesel, making it a cleaner option for the environment. This is crucial for Nigeria’s push toward reducing air pollution and tackling climate change. - Government support – The Nigerian government is actively pushing for CNG adoption as part of its energy diversification plan, offering incentives for conversion and the expansion of CNG refueling stations nationwide. - Sustainability – As fossil fuel supplies diminish, CNG, sourced from natural gas or renewable biogas, is a more sustainable fuel option. It positions Nigeria as a leader in clean energy for transportation. With these advantages, CNG is paving the way for a cleaner, more affordable, and sustainable future of transportation in Nigeria. #FutureOfFuel #CNGNigeria #SustainableEnergy #Mezovest
