It's #WorldPopulationDay. The theme "Leave No One Behind, Count Everyone" underscores the importance of inclusive population data. Accurate population data is crucial for effective policy-making, resource allocation, and addressing social inequalities. However, several factors can hinder achieving this goal: 📝Data collection is resource-intensive, and some countries may lack the financial means to conduct regular and comprehensive population censuses. 📝In regions experiencing conflict, war, or political instability, conducting population surveys can be difficult or impossible. Governments may be unwilling or unable to invest in comprehensive data collection. 📝In some cases, there is a lack of coordination between national and international agencies responsible for population data. This can result in fragmented or duplicated efforts, leading to incomplete or inaccurate data. 📌Addressing these challenges requires concerted efforts at both national and international levels. Investments in data collection infrastructure, technological advancements, and capacity-building for data collectors are essential. Additionally, fostering collaboration among governments, international organizations, and civil society can help ensure that population data is comprehensive, accurate, and inclusive, truly reflecting the theme of leaving no one behind. #worldpopulationday #datahealth #dataaccuracy #leavenoonebehind

  • The United Nations has dedicated every 23rd of May for the past 20 years as an International Day to End Obstetric Fistula. Obstetric fistula is the leakage of urine, feces, or both due to childbirth injuries, often caused by prolonged labor and lack of emergency obstetric care. Nigeria has an estimated 12,000 new cases annually, with a total of 150,000 cases, though the actual prevalence may be higher due to under-reporting. The condition affects women's physical, economic, psychological, and social lives, leading to health issues, stigma, discrimination, isolation, loss of income, poverty, and increased risk of suicide. While obstetric fistula can be treated surgically with a high success rate, the lack of resources and skilled surgeons in Nigeria hampers access to treatment. Effective care includes not only surgical repair but also psycho-social support to help women reintegrate into the community. Join us today Thursday 23rd May, 2024 by 5PM Nigeria Time for a crucial webinar titled "From Awareness to Action: Working Together to Eradicate Obstetric Fistula in Nigeria," featuring Dr Wole Ayegbusi (a Consultant Obstetrician, Perinatologist and Gynaecologist, Urogynaecologist [Fistula Surgeon] and the current Fistula Treatment Coordinator at the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospitals, Ile-Ife, Nigeria) to commemorate the 2024 United Nations' International Day to End Obstetric Fistula. • The mosquitoes we prevent today are the malaria cases we avoid treating in the future. #endmalaria #worldmalariaday

It's World Malaria Day A global initiative aimed at raising awareness about malaria and mobilizing efforts to combat this deadly disease. Malaria continues to be a significant public health challenge, particularly in regions with limited access to healthcare resources. Accelerating the fight against malaria is essential for achieving a more equitable world, where everyone has access to effective prevention, diagnosis, and treatment. Efforts to combat malaria include the distribution of insecticide-treated bed nets, indoor residual spraying, access to antimalarial medications, and ongoing research to develop new tools and strategies. These interventions not only save lives but also contribute to poverty reduction and economic development by preventing illness and promoting productivity. To accelerate the fight against malaria and achieve a more equitable world, it is crucial to strengthen health systems, increase funding for malaria prevention and control programs, enhance collaboration among governments, non-governmental organizations, and the private sector, and prioritize interventions that reach the most vulnerable populations, including children and pregnant women. By working together and investing in innovative approaches, we can move closer to the goal of eliminating malaria and creating a world where no one suffers from this preventable and treatable disease. #endmalaria #worldmalariaday #microforthresearchhub

The Crucial Role of Explanatory Models in Managing Infodemics We live in the age and time when information spreads rapidly and often uncontrollably; this makes the management of infodemics a subject of paramount concern for public health authorities worldwide. Defined as an overabundance of information, some accurate and some not, infodemics pose a significant challenge during disease outbreaks as it makes it difficult for individuals to discern trustworthy information from rumors, disinformation, misinformation and malinformation. For effective management of infodemics since it is difficult to totally eradicate it, it is expedient to consider and explore the vital roles that explanatory model could play. Explanatory models are frameworks or cognitive structures through which individuals interpret and make sense of phenomena, including health-related information. Rooted in cultural, social, and personal beliefs, explanatory models influence how individuals perceive, understand, and respond to health information and crises. These models encompass a wide range of factors, including cultural beliefs, religious ideologies, personal experiences, and societal norms. Explanatory models play a pivotal role in shaping individual behaviors and attitudes toward health information, particularly during infodemics. Understanding and addressing these models are essential for several reasons: 1. Tailored Communication Strategies: By recognizing the diverse explanatory models within communities, health authorities can develop tailored communication strategies that resonate with specific cultural, social, and religious beliefs. This approach facilitates the dissemination of accurate information while addressing misconceptions and mitigating the spread of misinformation. 2. Building Trust and Credibility: Effective infodemic management relies on building trust and credibility with communities. By acknowledging and respecting individuals' explanatory models, health authorities can establish rapport and foster trust, thereby enhancing the acceptance of accurate information and guidance. 3. Addressing Misconceptions and Stigma: Explanatory models often contribute to the proliferation of misconceptions and stigmatization during infodemics. By engaging with communities and addressing underlying beliefs and concerns, health authorities can dispel myths, reduce stigma, and promote informed decision-making. 4. Promoting Collaboration and Engagement: Engaging with explanatory models fosters collaboration and community engagement in infodemic management efforts. By involving community leaders, stakeholders, and influencers who understand local explanatory models, health authorities can leverage existing networks and resources to disseminate accurate information effectively.
