In a session that explored the complexities and opportunities of producing content for the diaspora, Colette Otusheso, CEO of Accelerate, and Ijeoma Onah, Founder, Nigerian International Film & TV Summit, delivered a compelling discourse about bridging gaps between African storytellers and the diaspora rooted in Accelerate’s mission to create authentic content that resonates with both homegrown audiences and those abroad.
One of the more thought-provoking aspects of the session was the exploration of the disconnect and challenges that filmmakers returning from diaspora face—both at home and within the diaspora itself. The difficulty of "fitting in" or gaining acceptance on either side, due to differences in popularity or cultural nuances, was acknowledged as a reality many face—which often resulted in a wealth of knowledge and fresh perspectives left by the sidelines.
Colette pointed out how Accelerate addresses this by positioning itself as a bridge, working to leverage the experiences, expertise, and ideas of the diaspora, especially those who are returning to Nigeria and highlighted how Accelerate has historically provided collaborative opportunities for these individuals, creating a space for them to contribute meaningfully to the evolving narrative of African storytelling.
Looking towards the future, Colette hinted at adopting models for content creation that fosters deeper inclusion and collaboration across the board with the ultimate goal of strengthening ties between African creators and the global diaspora community, fostering a sense of belonging both at home and abroad. She also highlighted the need to tell our own stories, reinforcing this by referencing Accelerate's upcoming documentary series, "The Decolonisation of Africa," set to debut at MIP Markets - MIPCOM, MIPJUNIOR, MIP CANCUN & MIP LONDON 2024. This underscores the group’s commitment to cultural representation. After all, stories are often best told by those who live them.
