Confronting Gender-Based Violence, One Community at a Time. In a landmark case highlighting the power of community advocacy and legal reform, four perpetrators received life imprisonment sentences from the Jigawa State High Court for the violent attack on a 14-year-old girl in the Gwaram community, Jigawa State, Nigeria. This historic decision signifies a major shift towards justice for abused minors. The case was reported by the Gwaram community leader, who had recently benefited from Bylaw Development and Implementation training provided by the Strengthening Civic Advocacy and Local Engagement (SCALE) project. This training empowered local leaders to establish and enforce bylaws explicitly prohibiting sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV) practices within their communities. Under these new provisions, reporting channels were clearly defined, enabling community members to report incidents of abuse safely and efficiently. The community leader's firm commitment to these bylaws was instrumental in initiating the legal process that led to the convictions. His decisive action not only brought justice to the young victim but also set a precedent for future cases. This case serves as an inspiring example for other communities, proving that with the right tools and commitment, meaningful progress can be made in the battle against SGBV. It also sends a powerful message that perpetrators will be held accountable, reinforcing the protection of women and girls. SCALE is a five-year project (2020-2025) funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and implemented by Palladium. The project strengthens the financial, management, and advocacy capacity of CSOs in Nigeria to create a more accountable, transparent, peaceful, and democratic Nigeria with more effective, and efficient public service delivery #NigeriaSCALE #EndGBV #CommunityAction #Makingitpossible
