An internationally engaged architectural design studio, rooted in Lagos

About us

An internationally engaged architectural design studio, rooted in Lagos. Our international portfolio includes individual houses, pavilions, commercial and cultural venues, community housing, and large-scale humanitarian projects. We believe in human-centered design to meet cultural and climatic needs – at its core, our work is about improving the ways people live. Drawing on traditional craft and material palettes from West Africa and beyond, our designs are as instinctive as they are sustainable. A wide array of built projects alongside contributions to the international architectural stage, informs a practice that sustains style and environment in equal measure. In Lagos, we experience the full complexities of a rapidly urbanizing continent. One of the new global, urban frontiers, the city affords us a unique insight into the metropolis of the future.

DARE TO DREAM! Five years ago, as a 12th grader, the imposing black structure of Maryland Mall captivated me. I was drawn to architecture, and learning that Tosin Oshinowo was the mastermind behind this project sparked a desire to meet her and learn from her expertise. While that opportunity didn't materialize then, fate had other plans. Fast forward to today, I've recently completed my internship at Oshinowo Studio, where I immersed myself in the world of architecture and design. This experience has been challenging, insightful, and truly invaluable. Oshinowo Studio fostered an environment where I could seek knowledge, make mistakes, and grow. I'm incredibly thankful to Tosin Oshinowo , who emphasized the significance of having a global perspective in design and the value of meticulousness. I'm also grateful to Nnamdi Opara and Olabode Toyo for showing me how coordinated efforts translate into the on-site reality. Special thanks to Abdulakeem Yusuff for encouraging my curiosity and pushing me to explore new ideas. I can't forget to mention Temitope Dada; your infectious laughter and constant encouragement have been a source of strength. Leaving Oshinowo Studio is bittersweet, but I carry the wisdom and lessons learned from each of you. Thank you for making my time here memorable!

  • We are excited to announce that Oshinowo Studio has been recognised at the African Property Awards for Best Retail Architecture Project in Nigeria. This achievement celebrates the Adidas Flagship Store in Lagos, the brand’s first in West Africa, located in the vibrant Victoria Island district. The store draws inspiration from Lagos itself, the home of urban culture in Nigeria and a global center of creativity. Oshinowo Studio conceived this project as a combination of clean lines overlaid with a façade that adds a layered texture, reflecting the depth and complexity of the upcycling, reuse and regeneration that can be found throughout the city. We are proud to have our work recognised by the African Property Awards, to whom we extend our gratitude.  A special thanks go to our fantastic team, collaborators, and client, ONL, who made this project a reality. #OshinowoStudio #ArchitectureAwards #AfricanPropertyAwards #RetailArchitecture #DesignExcellence #LagosArchitecture #Adidas

  • Among the sandy, palm tree-lined open expanses of the Lagos Seaside sits a minimalist seaside pavilion by Oshinowo Studio. This week, we are sharing throwback design details from our Coral Pavilion.  Design details for the upper deck—Maintaining a proportional balance between the roof parapet's safety requirements and the roof deck's functionality was important. We achieved this by creating a recessed slab, allowing a safe railing height without having to expand the parapet excessively. Design details for the aventurine table—This table was a bespoke design for our seaside pavilion. Using coloured concrete and aventurine crystals, we wanted to create a statement piece at the heart of the space. The table embodies three interlocking design elements, creating an illusion of weightlessness that challenges the conventional notion of gravity.

  • We are thrilled to announce that Tosin Oshinowo and Oshinowo Studio have been named Top Architect for Community by the Monocle Design Awards 2024. This selection recognizes Tosin Oshinowo for being a leading voice on architecture and design, thanks to our practice design work and her work as co-curator of events such as the Lagos Biennial. More recently, the Nigerian designer has expanded her work beyond West Africa, curating the most recent iteration of the Sharjah Architecture Triennial and headlining the 2024 Melbourne Design Week. Tosin says, ‘I’m conscious of producing work that respects the environment. Thankfully, selling this to clients is getting easier as it comes from a place of strength and beauty. We want to create architecture that will add value. It’s not about what a building looks like but rather about how it makes people feel and how useful it is. We are not fixated on something being iconic, which is a natural thing for architects to focus on. If we practice for the love of adding value, as opposed to gratifying ourselves by creating iconic buildings, then we will produce much better architecture for cities.“
