On 'Court' Marriage "In Nigeria, people commonly refer to it as 'court marriage.' However, this term is misleading as the court doesn't perform or certify marriages. Instead, it's called 'Registry marriage' because it is conducted at the registry. For example, the Federal Marriage Registry in Ikoyi. Today, all local government areas have a Marriage Registry and Registrars to wed couples. So wherever you are in the country, you are covered. The requirements and process are the same anywhere. Your passports, sworn affidavits of bachelorhood/spinsterhood, birth certificate and publishing a marriage notice for 21 days Unlike Church or customary marriage, the Registry doesn't necessarily require the parents' presence or consent. It recognises the fact that marriage is expected to be between two consenting adults. All you need at the registry are just 2 witnesses. As such, you could only have 4 people at your wedding! The advantages: - Getting legally married protects you and your partner equally under the law. This means that your rights are secured, and conflicts are less likely to happen. If issues arise, the law will guide resolution. Your contributions to the relationship are recognized. Assets and property will be shared fairly, based on your individual contributions. - It is better when processing documents like visas. - Ideal for those who hate crowds and noise, this option offers a peaceful and private celebration. The ceremony is simple, and everyone goes home afterwards. You could still have a reception, although you are not permitted to eat inside the registry. Some registries have halls and restaurants they rent out to couples. - It is easy to plan and budget-friendly. - The marriage ceremony is quite fast, it could take as little as 30 minutes to get through the exchange of vows and rings with your partner, signing the marriage register and officially documenting your union. Any extra time is yours to use as you wish. Note: A lawyer can provide basic guidance if you're unsure about the marriage process, and requirements, and have concerns about property or inheritance.
