Assembly of privacy & data protection professionals discussing issues surrounding privacy and data protection in Nigeria
About us
Since 2019, privacy and data protection issues have been discussed within the Nigerian business space like never before. Two factors are responsible for this awakened consciousness. First, the coming into effect of EU GDPR in 2018 and then the Nigeria Data Protection Regulation (NDPR) issuance in January 2019 by the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA). Both regulations have far-reaching consequences for Nigerian businesses especially the ones processing personal data in the regular course of their corporate and marketing activities. The NDPR especially imposes obligations on certain demography of entities to file annual audits, designate Data Protection Officers (DPOs), engage Data Protection Compliance Organizations (DPCOs) etc. The recurring need for businesses to comply with these obligations continues to expose the dearth of privacy professionals in Nigeria over the years on one hand while simultaneously also emphasizing the necessity for capacity building and industry engagement. To bridge this knowledge gap, the Law Firm of Olumide Babalola LP hosts this annual assembly of privacy and data protection professionals and stakeholders to discuss issues surrounding privacy and data protection in Nigeria.

“HOW CAN I LOSE WHEN I CAME HERE WITH NOTHING?”-Destiny Ogedegbe On April 3rd 2024, I attended the PrivCon Nigeria Conference & Privacy Awards 2024 as a Nominee for the Award category of "Leading Light in Privacy” (Research)", and returned home as a-Nominee. Looking back now, while I did not win that award, I consider it a special honour to share the nomination with my co-Nominee, Ms. Dorcas Tsebee, CIPP/E as well as the thoroughly-deserved Winner of that category, Mr. Ridwan Oloyede-whose remarkable strides in privacy and data protection remains a source of inspiration for many budding data protection & privacy experts, myself no less. By all means- the nomination was simply an outstanding recognition, in and of itself, given my quite nascent venture into the data protection & privacy space. It was indeed a memorable day, and I can pay Mr. Olumide Babalola and PrivCon Nigeria no greater compliment than to say it was a well-organized, properly executed and highly impactful event-from the insightful breakout sessions, rich discourse on different privacy & protection issues to the Awards ceremony. I also look fondly back at the opportunity to reconnect and interact with different people; old-time friends, long-term mentors and recent acquaintances including Kelechi Achinonu (Panelist), Samuel Ngwu, CIPP/E (deserving Nominee), Sir Toheeb Amuda, Esq (Mentor/Special Guest), UGO Nwaokike (Winner), Ms. Omesi Mamedu FIMC CMC (Panelist/Nominee), Ademayowa Borokinni, Sesi Hundeyin, FICIArb, Ifeoluwa Ebiseni (Winner), Akin Ifeanyi,Tom Utum(Nominee), Joshua Adeyeye (Nominee), Esther Nkechinyere Odunze(Nominee), Majolagbe Oladunni as well as top legal minds/thought leaders in the legal space including the distinguished Chairman of the NBA Lagos, Mr. Olabisi Makanjuola and other amazing personalities I was privileged to engage at the event.
