Search for Common Ground is an international peacebuilding organisation that works to end violent conflict in Nigeria

About us

SEARCH FOR COMMON GROUND is the largest dedicated peacebuilding organization. Since 1982, we have worked to end violent conflict and to build healthy, safe, and just societies all over the world. Currently, we work in 31 countries across Africa, Asia, Europe, the Middle East, and North America. OUR MISSION is to transform the way the world deals with conflict, away from adversarial approaches and toward cooperative solutions. WE BELIEVE that conflict is inevitable but violence is not. Conflict is a natural result of human diversity. When we deal with conflict adversarially, it generates polarization and violence. When we collaborate, conflict catalyzes positive change. OUR VISION is a world where cooperation is the norm—where differences stimulate social progress, rather than precipitate violence.

  • Recently, our team visited Gbajimba in Guma Local Government Area, Benue State to collect success stories. Through our United in Security project, we are making strides in fostering peace and cooperation between communities and security agencies. Some highlights from our work in Gbajimba: - Training selected community members to strengthen local peacebuilding efforts. - Establishing the Community Security Advocacy Dialogue Forum, which creates a platform for dialogue and promotes collaboration between security agencies and local communities. -Supporting small scale initiatives to foster and enhance cordial working relationships between security agencies and community members This project is especially impactful as Guma community was one of the areas hardest hit during the Farmer-Herder crisis. Today, we are seeing a transformation – farmers and herders are now living in relative peace and improved trust between security agencies and community members, thanks to the collaboration and commitment to peacebuilding. We believe that these stories of resilience and collaboration must be told. Each success, like that of Gbajimba, brings us one step closer to lasting peace in Benue State. #Peacebuilding #Collaboration #HumanRights #SocialJustice

At Search-Nigeria, we are working to strengthen relationships with traditional leaders and key stakeholders to promote better ways to resolve conflicts in local communities. Our team in Adamawa State visited Dr. Ahmed Mustapha, the traditional head of Girei, as part of this effort. The team also met with the Executive Chairman of Girei Local Government, Hon. Adamu Umar Dallatu, who praised our work in helping the community address security issues and build peace. The chairman praised our work in helping the Community Security Architectural Dialogue (CSAD) and even offered an office space for them to use! This support will help us work together better to solve problems and keep our community safe and peaceful. The project Contributing to the Mitigation of Conflict Over Natural Resources Between Farmer and Herder Communities in Adamawa and Taraba States is funded by the European Union in Nigeria
