For the first time since Botswana's independence almost 60 years ago, Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) has lost majority control of the parliament and therefore lost the presidency. Although some parliament seats are still pending, the remarkable loss is clear. Umbrella for Democratic Change (UDC) has secured the majority of elected seats. View full results on the Stears platform (free access via our Open Data program) https://lnkd.in/dXBD65b9 This political turnover represents a radical shift in voter sentiment and expectations, similar to South Africa's ANC's loss earlier this year. Voters have lost faith in incumbent parties and want change. Botswana's demonstration of democracy and a peaceful transition of power also serves as a beacon of light after a series of elections in authoritarian-leaning countries over the past few months. In Mozambique, Tunisia, Algeria, and Rwanda, incumbent powers all retained control, with many opposition candidates barred from competing. More elections are coming up in Q4. Since we founded Stears Inc., my co-founders and I have been obsessed with hiring the best African talent we can find. As difficult as that has been over the last couple of years, we have been aggressive in keeping our talent standards high. So, I cannot explain how proud I was to see a recent story by Archivi.ng, which digitises old newspapers in Nigeria. In 2010, The Nation newspaper published a list, “The West Africa Examinations Council - Best 100 Candidates”. The top students were ranked based on their total scores across all the subjects they sat for in 2009. They analysed this list to identify interesting trends. And what did they find? Well, when they asked the question: What did these top 100 students do after leaving University, they looked at which organisations they went to, and LinkedIn data showed that: "4% of the people in the top 100 students have spent some time at KPMG, 3% at Stears, and 2% at GTBank. These statistics highlight a trend among the high-achievers gravitating towards roles in leading companies across various sectors" If this doesn't tell us that Stears is one of the best in talent, I don't know what will. https://lnkd.in/dTd8h-sj
