Sahara Centre is bound by a commitment to advancing the socio-cultural dimensions of sustainable development in Nigeria.
About us
At The Sahara Centre, we are committed to advancing socio-cultural development in Nigeria through research projects and interventions. We seek answers to the fundamental issues that affect the development of our society. Culture is who we are and what shapes our identity. We focus on the ‘people’ element of sustainable development to build a better Nigerian society. INDIGO is an initiative of The Sahara Centre. We provide an eco-friendly hub specifically for researchers, right in the centre of Lagos while also building a community that produces quality research in Nigeria. INDIGO is home to researchers, architects, artists, psychotherapists, biomedical scientists, urban developers, project managers and others doing amazing research-based work in Nigeria. LANTERN is our series of workshops and seminars for individuals, corporate and government organisations. Our aim is to develop reflective, problem-solving skills which contribute to sound decision making, leadership ability and effectiveness. Our various activities aim to teach, mentor and inspire a new generation of critical thinkers. They in turn also contribute to societal change through volunteering and interning on projects. We promote collective action and document these interventions in our case studies so others can learn from the insights garnered from our projects.

In commemorating World Sustainable Transport Day on November 26th, 2023, The Sahara Centre is launching an Open Call for Ideas to make Nigeria’s streets safer. Have you ever had personal experiences traveling in cities where walking, taking public transport, driving or even crossing the road felt unsafe? We get it too. Sustainable transportation is not just a puzzle of tech and policy— it's also about breaking down social barriers. These challenges require collective societal action and public engagement to ensure the safety of our streets. Our unique backgrounds and interests can offer creative and innovative solutions to tackling the issue of safe streets in cities and communities across Nigeria. The Sahara Centre has a vision for sustainable social development across Nigeria. We recognize the impact of poor road safety and lack of access to safe and affordable mobility. Still, we aim to harness the opportunities and identify innovative solutions to address these challenges. If you have THAT genius idea to increase public awareness of road safety, we want to hear from you. This Open Call awards the most innovative proposal and the opportunity to work with us to develop your ideas further and bring them to life.
