In commemoration of the World Anesthesia Day yesterday, the incredible anesthesiologists at the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital Ituku-Ozalla, Enugu State (UNTH) hosted an intensive training session on Basic Life Support. The training kicked off with a brief BLS/Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) lecture delivered by Dr Moghalu followed by stories from Dr Arum, Dr Iloabachie, and other anesthesiologists on their practical experiences with delivering adequate BLS and the challenges faced in the country especially regarding the lack of AED (Automated External Defibrillator) devices. We ended the seminar with hands-on practical at different stations on the various aspects of BLS: 🧩Performing CPR on adult dummies 🧩Techniques for using an AMBU(Artificial Manual Breathing Unit) bag 🧩Performing CPR on baby dummies 🧩Intubation (I intubated the oesosphagus on my first trial😅) 🧩Use of oropharyngeal airway kit and Laryngoscope 🧩Questions and Answers Despite receiving numerous official and unofficial CPR lectures, I must say, that the practical aspect was an entirely different experience. In particular, a thought kept recurring to me: "Are your compressions within the 5-6cm depth". I eventually got a hang of the techniques involved in all the stations and administered back-to-back perfect CPRs as indicated by the models😌 It was truly a wonderful session yesterday, and with the practical experience, I am quite confident that in a real emergency, I won't be caught panicking with the crowd. To all anesthesiologists out there - thank you for your expertise and dedication. #WorldAnesthesiaDay #BLS #HealthcareHeroes

The month of October is Breast Cancer Awareness month and the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital Ituku-Ozalla, Enugu State (UNTH) joined in celebrating International Cancer Week on the 4th and 5th of the month to celebrate and create awareness. This is me joining the international community to support women living with breast cancer because #No #Woman #Should #Face #Breast #Cancer #Alone While I was on my Exercise Immunology Internship Rotation, I was exposed to the realities of women living with breast cancer and the further complications associated with the management of breast cancer. What do I have to offer such women as a physiotherapist? 🤔 👂 Prevention is cheaper than cure. Examine your breasts at least once a month. You can do this at the end of your monthly period. (I will attach a guide from Myrtue Medical Center demonstrating how to do this). 🤔 If you ever have to undergo surgery, speak to your surgeon or physician about seeing a physiotherapist immediately after your surgery; you can discuss it with them if you are not referred to a physiotherapist requesting to be referred though you can see one on a self-referral basis. Why do you have to see a physiotherapist? There are two commonly occurring complications - lymphoedema and axillary web syndrome post-mastectomy. These complications, if not well-managed can affect your quality of living and pose a challenge to your daily functioning. They are not always noticed or might be ignored till they start affecting daily activities. The good news is that both can be managed by a physiotherapist. Lymphoedema starts with a little pain and then swelling which gradually increases while axillary web syndrome presents as a restriction on the movement of the shoulder and a visible tightening in the armpit region. 📍 Finally, talk to a qualified healthcare professional whenever you have questions or are confused. I am Dera Eleke and I am sending love and support to women living with breast cancer (+ their family, friends, and caregivers) because No Woman Should Face Breast Cancer Alone. Cheers 🎉
