The Embassy of the Netherlands in Uganda had the honor of welcoming Reinette Klever, the Dutch Minister for Foreign Trade and Development, on her first official trip to an African country. Yesterday, the Minister visited Dutch entrepreneurs in Jinja to learn more about doing business in Uganda. Her first visit was to De Heus, a company specializing in animal nutrition that is constructing its first dedicated aquafeed plant in Uganda. During this visit, she signed a Letter of Intent with Hon. Hellen Adoa, State Minister for Fisheries, to collaborate in the Fisheries and Aquaculture sector between the Netherlands and Uganda.
Later that day, she learned more about the Embassy's Food & Nutrition programs from various implementing partners, including Pearl Capital Partners, SNV, GOAL Uganda, Wageningen University & Research, TechnoServe, and Cordaid. With our partner Agriterra, she signed a new program focused on strengthening Farmers organizations to support small holder farmers. This program will target 200.000 households in over 25 districts across Uganda.
She then visited Lake Victoria to see Yalelo Uganda's aquaculture farms, where she had the opportunity to feed some of the fish 🐟 and inaugurate the expansion of a new fish farm in Njeru—an investment of over EUR 20 million, making it the largest aquaculture investment in Uganda.
Back in Kampala, the Minister took time to visit the Embassy. Veronica Mukite, our Senior Consular Affairs Officer, welcomed her on behalf of the entire Embassy team and explained how the Embassy collaborates closely with our Headquarters, the Ministerie van Buitenlandse Zaken in The Hague. She also emphasized that the Embassy's diversity strengthens its team spirit.
The Minister held bilateral meetings 🇳🇱🇺🇬 with two Ugandan ministers to discuss matters of mutual interest. The first meeting was with Hon. Jeje Odongo, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Uganda. Minister Klever praised Uganda’s humanitarian support, highlighting the strong partnership between our nations. The second meeting was with Hon. Norbert Mao, Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs, where she acknowledged Uganda’s contributions to regional stability and shared insights on current Dutch policy directions.
In the evening, the Minister attended a dinner at the residence with representatives of the Dutch private sector, gaining further insights into the opportunities and challenges of doing business in Uganda. She signed an MoU with the Netherlands Uganda Trade and Investment Platform (NUTIP_ Kampala), aimed at strengthening and supporting the Dutch private sector in the coming years. Alongside the Chair of NUTIP, the Minister symbolically rolled out an orange carpet to announce the ‘Orange Carpet Visa Facility.’ This new, simplified visa application process is intended for staff members of companies and organizations that have significant business ties with the Netherlands and a demonstrated need for regular visits.
