KWF Kankerbestrijding awards 1.8 million euros to research inclusive care for incurably ill cancer patients. KWF is funding 3 research projects at Amsterdam UMC that focus on caring for people from vulnerable minority groups who know they will die of cancer. One of the projects led by Hans Knoop will research appropriate psychosocial care for incurably ill cancer patients with a migration background. Lia van Zuylen is leading the research into creating a toolkit for healthcare providers on LGBTQ+ inclusivity. The project led by Niels van Poecke investigates how making, viewing and experiencing art helps vulnerable cancer patients give meaning to their lives. https://lnkd.in/gvGZANGY

The month November is Lung Cancer Awareness Month. This month, as Cancer Center Amsterdam, we want to highlight what important work is being done within Amsterdam UMC in the field of Pulmonary Oncology. Radboudumc and Amsterdam UMC have partnered up to improve the follow-up care for lung cancer patients, by investigating the added value of PET/CT scans in the follow-up of stage III non-small cell lung cancer. Since January 2024 recruitment has begun for the NVALT31-PET study, funded by Zorginstituut Nederland and endorsed by Nederlandse Vereniging van Artsen voor Longziekten en Tuberculose (NVALT). With 25 hospitals already onboard and more joining the initiative, we aim to enhance early detection of recurrences or metastases. https://lnkd.in/e264VqiN

Cancer develops through various genetic changes, including chromosomal alterations. A subset of head and neck tumors, termed ‘CNA-quiet,’ shows minimal chromosomal changes and is often HPV-negative. Recent research by Tara Muijlwijk, Irene Nauta, Jos Poell, Rieneke van de Ven, and led by René Leemans and Ruud H Brakenhoff, identifies these tumors. The findings were published in Nature Communications https://lnkd.in/ekKXG4_8

With the Zuidas Sustainability Award, organizing parties Amsterdam Zuidas, Green Business Club Zuidas and Hello Zuidas give a stage to sustainable projects realized in the Zuidas. This year, the Research & Diagnostics Center ADORE is participating. You can vote for the RDC ADORE through the website of Zuidasduurzaam: https://lnkd.in/evAF-dZH The Research & Diagnostics Center ADORE is the first building at Amsterdam UMC to have a heat and cold storage system. With this system, which stores energy in the ground, the building is heated or cooled in a sustainable manner. The roof is not only full of solar panels, but is also used as a water buffer. Here excess rainwater is collected and gradually drained into the sewer system, preventing sewers from overflowing. All windows in the building are low-carbon glass. Thanks in part to these measures, the Research & Diagnostics Center ADORE is as much as 25 percent more sustainable than the requirements for a nearly energy-neutral building (BENG methodology).

During the TCS Amsterdam Marathon, runners will work up a sweat. They do this not only to push personal limits, but also to raise as much money as possible for cancer research. Why does research into this terrible disease remain so important? Dr. Mariette Labots and Dr. Wendy Onstenk explain in an article in De Telegraaf. “The overarching goal is to improve care for patients with cancer." Amsterdam UMC - Cancer Center Amsterdam heeft dit gerepost
Could an innovative cancer treatment be used as a preventative vaccine? Arjan Griffioen, Else Huijbers and team have been developing proteins that specifically target cancer cells in the blood, leaving healthy tissue untouched. The innovative treatment, produced via bacteria, has been patented by Amsterdam UMC, thanks to support from IXA. Building on this success, the startup CimCure B.V. was established to validate and further develop these vaccines (in partnership with Intravacc). The first clinical trials are now on their way. Every step of this journey—from vision to execution—has relied on the team's dedication, as well as essential funding and investment. Spoiler alert: bringing the new treatment to market is not done overnight! Curious about the steps necessary? Watch the video to hear the full story by Arjan Griffioen and Else Huijbers! Outsourcing part of your care in the context of “the right care in the right place". It's not always easy, but it is something we are increasingly doing as a teaching hospital as a result of the Kleur bekennen program in which portfolio choices are made. Hematology took this step with the BETER-poli [Better clinic], an aftercare clinic for patients who were diagnosed with Hodgkin's or non-Hodgkin's lymphoma in their younger years. Read the full interview with Prof. dr. Josée Zijlstra on the Cancer Center Amsterdam website. Amsterdam UMC #Hematology #Cancer #AmsterdamUMC #Kleurbekennen https://lnkd.in/embX_vmj
