If millions of smallholder farmers are empowered by accessible and relevant technology, we will see the following trends: 🌀 sustainable practices increase yields 🌀 the economies of these communities will be strengthened 🌀 more capital flows to these farmers Aqua-Spark strives to increase smallholder profitability by increasing access to sustainable practices and technologies. Smallholders play a critical role in the food system, and in the future will trend toward a more specific role in the supply chain (e.g. nursing fish) or be serviced by digital marketplaces that leverage smallholders’ sheer numbers enabling increased access quality inputs and access to markets at scale. Our 2023 Impact Report highlights each of our Aqua-Spark Outcomes, including this one. Read it here: https://lnkd.in/gawdcakg #Aquaculture #Impact #Sustainability

Spotlight on #seaweed! There are thousands of species of seaplants, commonly referred to as seaweed. When cultivated, many can regenerate marine ecosystems, offer a source of quality nutrition, be used in animal feed additives, and be transformed into bioplastics, immunostimulants, and biostimulants. Thank you, FAO, for sharing this informative video. #Aquaculture #Regenerative #Sustainability

The Global Shrimp Forum is not only a platform for exchanging the latest knowledge but also a place to make new acquaintances and build partnerships. Year after year, we are joined by some amazing companies, without whom the shrimp industry wouldn’t be where it is today. Some of these companies become sponsors, and just as they partnered with us, they may be a dependable partner for your business. ----- It goes without saying that shrimp aquaculture is high-risk. It helps to have the intelligence to assess the risk and someone to back you up financially. For three years in a row, the Global Shrimp Forum Foundation has partnered with Rabobank and Aqua-Spark, pioneers in the financial and investment fields related to the shrimp industry. Aqua-Spark is a global investment fund dedicated to making investments in sustainable aquaculture businesses that generate environmental and social impact alongside financial returns. Rabobank is a Dutch multinational banking and financial services company known for its strong focus on food and agribusiness sectors, promoting sustainability and innovation within these industries. In order to be a trusted source of high-quality, nutrient-rich food, aquaculture operations need to reduce their antimicrobial reliance. 🐟 At Aqua-Spark, we believe in a food system where aquatic products are healthy and diseases are prevented (e.g. through the adoption of responsible aquaculture practices) rather than treated. Some diseases will occur, but the aquaculture industry of the future will see the rare use of antimicrobials to reduce the risk of AMR, making the world healthier not only for its animals but also for its people. What is Aqua-Spark’s approach to transforming the aquaculture industry? In our 2023 Impact Report, we describe our theory of transformation, which shows how what we bring to the table (inputs), leads to the investments we make (outputs). This is how our portfolio companies, along with our unique investment approach, will achieve our desired outcomes, which in turn will generate a broader impact as described in the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. The potential for this transformation calls for capital, markets, and industry to work together. Working together to support disruptive and scalable innovations will allow the industry to grow toward new levels of sustainability. While we cannot do this alone, we are committed to doing our part. At Aqua-Spark, we aim to increase valorization of underutilized resources in the aquaculture industry. How? We invest in companies that maximize their efficiencies both in terms of inputs and outputs, in which every part of a fish is essential and worthy of care, and what was once designated as by-product or ‘waste’ is put to good use as quality proteins, oils or nutraceuticals. This will generate both a positive impact and increased returns. Learn more about our Aqua-Spark outcomes in our 2023 Impact Report: https://lnkd.in/e394fAhX #Aquaculture #Waste #Sustainability

Since we need to prioritize and improve animal welfare in aquaculture, how do we first find out what's happening under the water? 🌊 CageEye AS's legacy hydroacoustic technology and cutting-edge deep learning combine to provide insights into what's happening beneath the surface in salmon farming. Check out The Fish Site's interview with Sunil Kadri to open your eyes (and ears) as to how CageEye's sensors and software can help solve and mitigate health and welfare challenges faced by the industry.

CageEye AS's hydroacoustic sensors are set to revolutionize salmon farming by addressing health issues plaguing the industry. Developed over decades, these sensors monitor fish behavior and welfare, providing critical data even in low-visibility conditions. Unlike traditional cameras, they offer a comprehensive view of fish populations, enhancing overall health management. 🐟 📊 Using AI and deep learning, CageEye’s technology facilitates automated feeding and welfare analytics, helping farmers optimize feeding times and reduce stress on fish. This innovation is especially relevant as health challenges in the salmon sector, like infectious diseases, continue to grow. 🧠 💡 The technology has been adopted by several salmon producers in Norway and Chile, with demand surging. Offered on a rental basis, CageEye’s sensors provide a cost-effective solution by using operational budgets rather than capital expenditure, promising a strong return on investment through improved fish health. 📈 💰 While designed for offshore use, the system is adaptable with future modifications planned for use in tanks and ponds. CageEye’s commitment to advancing salmon farming technology underscores its potential to significantly improve fish welfare and productivity in the industry. 🌊 🔧 https://lnkd.in/dyUTEHmW #aquaculture #technology #salmon #sensortechnology
