What was once a vast expanse of multi-year, stable sea ice is now a patchwork of thin, young ice struggling to survive each season. This change isn't just about numbers, a worrying decrease of more than 40% of summer sea ice surface – it's a tangible loss of a unique environment that helps regulate our planet’s climate. From a vast expanse of white ice, to a blue horizon of water. At Arctic Reflections, we believe that we can counter this decline. With our ice-thickening methodology, we aim to extend the lifetime of Arctic sea ice in the summer, leading to a higher albedo effect. Let us not just reflect on what's lost. 🌍 UN Report: "No More Hot Air" – It's Time to Save the Arctic and Our Planet ❄️ On 24 October 2024, the UN Emissions Gap Report delivered a powerful message: "No more hot air, please." The melting snowman on the report's cover is a strong reminder of the urgency. With the Arctic warming at an alarming rate, we are nearing a dangerous tipping point. Melting sea ice is accelerating global warming, and without immediate action, the consequences could be devastating. At Arctic Reflections, we are committed to contributing to the solution. Through our Arctic sea ice thickening efforts, we aim to help stabilize global temperatures and protect this fragile region. The report calls for a 57% reduction in emissions by 2035—urgent action is essential to save the Arctic and our planet. Great to have Veerle Schiet on board! Having lived in Svalbard for a year, she has a really practical mindset, which really helps in preparing our next winter field test!

🌍 Meet our new engineering intern, Veerle Schiet! We’re excited to welcome Veerle to Arctic Reflections, as she joins our mission of restoring Arctic sea ice by pumping seawater on top of it in winter to accelerate freezing. Currently studying mechanical engineering at TU Delft, she brings very relevant knowledge and expertise. Veerle even spent a year in the Arctic already, at UNIS in Svalbard. There, she focused her studies on atmospheric dynamics and sea-ice mechanics, deepening her passion for the Arctic and climate issues. 🌍❄️ Arctic Reflections: Field Test results released ❄️ We are thrilled to share the Research Summary Report from our April 2024 field test in Svalbard! As many of you know, Arctic Reflections is committed to restoring Arctic Sea Ice as part of the fight against global warming. In this field test we rigorously tested ice thickening by pumping water from beneath the ice onto the surface to speed up freezing. 📊 Key Highlights: - We collected nearly 100 ice cores to measure salinity, density, temperature, and thickness. - Remote monitoring equipment was installed to track the thickened ice and a reference ice site until it fully melted by June 19th. - This one-of-a-kind dataset, along with detailed data-gathering methods, will be openly shared with the scientific community in an upcoming publication. This is just the first step in validating the effectiveness of Arctic Ice Thickening to preserve natural habitats and maintain sea ice as a crucial reflective surface.
