Valued $96B (2021-2023), raised $478M in Q2 2024 with investments in H1 2024 up 45% YoY, two new unicorns (DataSnipper and Mews), and ranks among Europe's top 3 ecosystems; 𝗗𝘂𝘁𝗰𝗵 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘁𝘂𝗽 𝗲𝗰𝗼𝘀𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗻𝘂𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗮𝘀 𝗮 𝗵𝘂𝗯 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗶𝗻𝗻𝗼𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻. Amsterdam is the main hub of the Netherlands, hosting around 4,000 startups, including unicorns like Mollie, Mambu, and Backbase. In 2023 alone Netherlands created 256,000 jobs globally and 151,000 in Netherlands. In 2023 when investments were down 37% globally; however, Netherlands only saw a decline of 25%. In deep tech space, over the last five years, stable investment has been observed, mainly health and life science, Agri-food, and semiconductors, bucking the trend of YoY tech investment decline from 2021. In 2023, 48% (€978M) of the funding was in deep tech companies, which is more than Germany and the United Kingdom (30% and 27%, respectively). Health tech companies like VectorY Therapeutics (€129M) and Tagworks Pharmaceuticals (€59.53M), and semiconductor giants like ASML and Nearfield Instruments (€38M) secured the most funding in 2023. Research based startups raised around 20% of total Dutch tech funding in 2023. On average, each Dutch research institute created 3 research based ventures over the last 5 years, of which 1.6 are IP licensed. This means 7 out of 8 Patents are either not used or licensed to corporates, highlighting a growth opportunity. In general, Europe saw a 56% increase in acquisitions and buyouts as compared to 20% in the US. Significant acquisitions and buyouts from the Netherlands were PayU (€550m) and Synaffix BV (€100M). Earlier this fall, I had the opportunity to catch up with a great group of fellow Dutch deep tech investors in Amsterdam and witnessed firsthand the excitement in the ecosystem. Huge shoutout and appreciation to Invest-NL, Coalition Capital, Cottonwood Technology Fund, Value Creation Capital, FORWARD.one, Innovation Industries, Curiosity VC, Keen Venture Partners, imec.xpand, YES!Delft, Positron Ventures, United Dutch Technologies Fund, and many more. Netherland has a promising startup ecosystem with initiatives like the startup visa and the residence permit for essential startup personnel, ranks 7th on the global innovation index, 6 universities among the top 100 and is ranked #5 for talent competitiveness (Global Talent Competitiveness Index 2023). Techleap recently announced a partnership with Google and yesterday held a joint event, AI Connect, in Amsterdam. According to Techleap, AI has the potential to increase the Dutch economy by €85 billion (+9% in GDP), but we need to act now and work together to fully unlock its potential. It means bringing knowledge, technology infrastructure, solutions and human power to the table to support their growth and success. And that’s what AI Connect did. Helena Samodurova was there to learn about how AI companies can thrive in the Netherlands and to talk about ways Incooling can push forward its cooling solutions for data centers worldwide. "In the Netherlands, we should focus on what we’re best at,” said Helena about yesterday’s event. “Some countries are more risk-averse and more adventurous, but we are good at improving and growing things in a stable way. That should be the focus from our perspective.” Techleap and Deloitte also released its latest in-depth report – AI Scaling Challenges for Dutch Founders – which dives deep into the key barriers AI scaleups face, and more importantly, provides actionable steps to help founders overcome them.
