The innovation behind a plastic tile. Why it is awesome, and why it did not make it to the market. 👇 One of the projects I am most proud of is New Marble. We developed a tile made from fully recycled PET plastic. We found out in our initial experiments that PET crystallizes when cooling down after melting. It becomes hard and brittle, something you tipycally want to avoid when processing it. But we looked at it from the other side It is just like ceramics: hard and brittle. Can we make it into a product that could replace ceramics? Lots of experiments later we managed to developed a patented technique to control the crystallization and turn PET in it into a tile: straight, solid and beautiful. Our next goal was to make it work as a tile and get it certified. With a new product in a very traditional market we needed to make it work with existing application techniques. We therefor developed and tested the glue and grout process together with Kiesel. As there was no standard certification for plastic tiles we had to come up with a tailored testing & certification program. Flammability for example is not really a thing for ceramics but for plastic it is. In the end we managed to have the tiles certified by KIWA and get a Castor Gaea classification for sustainable products. We were thrilled to have the first fully certified tiles made from 100% recycled plastic.  The tiles were applied in the some iconic projects. New Marble tiles were used for the first Circulair Bathroom of The Netherlands and the Recycled Park in Rotterdam, a park floating in the river Maas, with tiles made from PET plastic from the river Maas. So why did we have to discontinue it? A combination of market and technical challenges. The product was very niche. The market demanded bigger and bigger tiles while we could not produce the tiles over 20x20cm. And as we did not want to use bottle grade recycled PET, we were very limited in colors and these types of PET were harder to process. There were technical challenges as well. Next to challenges in scaling the process, the thermal expansion coefficient of plastic tiles is bigger than ceramics. In other words the tiles get bigger when they become warmer, resulting in tiles popping off the wall outside on hot summer days. This seriously limited the application possibilities. The decision to start is easy, the decision to stop is hard. I am very proud of everyone that has contributed to this project.

Sustainability/ Product designer at Beter Future Factory and Upstream Trophies 💚Helping businesses prepare for the circular economy.

The Dutch Design Week in Eindhoven is always a great opportunity to gather some much needed inspiration as a designer. Here are a few objects that caught my eye during my visit this week: - Breathing light objects - Expressive 3d prints - Light and material interactions Key take-aways for me: - Current design themes: Equality/accessibility, Sustainability and urban well being - Large nozzle 3d printing with interesting applications in architecture - While Artificial intelligence slob is slowly starting to pollute the design world, there are still lots of designers experimenting with traditional crafts. Did you get a change to visit? What projects stood out for you and what are your take aways? #ddw

Eco-dilemma: Using glue or screws in products? Sustainability is all about the details 🔍 What might seem like a minor decision, can have a big impact on circularity, design flexibility and costs. When designing sustainable products, even the smallest choices, like using screws or glue, make a difference. In our latest Eco-dilemmas blog post, we dive into the challenges of choosing the best way of assembling trophies. Key insights: ♻ Sustainability: Screws enable disassembly and can be recycled. Overall glue has lower CO2 impact for production but complicates repairing, refurbishment or recycling and therefore increase waste. 🏆 Design: Screws deliver durability and flexibility, while glue offers a sleeker finish but can lead to problems with certain materials, like staining or gradual release over time. 💶 Cost: Screws have higher upfront costs for material and installation but offer long-term value through repairability. While glue is cheaper initially but leads to more waste and expenses over time. From a lineair to a circular product and a 50% lower cost price. We made a redesign of a product with over 1.5 million units produced. Want to know how?👇🏼 Voedingscentrum created "Eetmaatje" which helps people measure portions and cut down on food waste. This very handy measuring cup has been around for years but it was time for an upgrade. Here's how we made it happen: • Replacing virgin PP for a fully recyclable biobased PP made from discarded frying oil • Optimising stability so it won't tip over by making many prototypes and testing them • Better readability of the measurements by using laser engraving • Optimising the geometry for production (injection molding) for faster production and longer mold life • Working with one of the best Dutch manufacturers for food safe products The development was completed in just a few months So we made it more sustainable, user-friendly and for 50% of the original cost price. For the Startup in Residence program by Gemeente Den Haag, Better Future Factory developed a modular parklet system tailored to residents' needs and new uses for parking spots. 🚧 The Challenge Dutch streets, often designed before cars became common, struggle with parked cars, charging poles, waste containers, and more. Streets must also become climate adaptive, and residents should feel responsible for their streets. 🔧 Flexible Use Creative sessions with residents led to a parklet configured as a mini-park with plants, a garden workbench, water tank, mini library, and benches. Inspired by Studio Klinkenberg's design, the parklet can be configured in various ways using five “puzzle pieces. ♻️ Circular Materials The parklet is made from sustainable materials: recycled artificial grass for decking, planters from 100% recycled plastic, and European thermo wood (so no paint is needed) for the wooden elements, providing durability with a low environmental footprint. I firmly believe that recognition is key to building a positive culture and keeping teams engaged. I recall that the main reason I left Accenture was not the salary or the job itself but the lack of appreciation. Recognition is the driving force behind SHV Energy ‘s Innovation Award, which is given in a ceremony attended by C-Level executives from all countries. This year's trophy, beautifully crafted by Better Future Factory , has a "B" shape that symbolises "Beyond," our innovation strategy. The integration of sustainable materials further enhances its beauty—a true masterpiece.
