How prescriptive should a project brief be? I explored this question today during a lecture for students from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) visiting the Center for People and Buildings (CfPB) Using a diagram from the excellent book 'Managing the Brief for Better Design' by Alastair Blyth and John Worthington MBE, I examined the balance between prescriptive and performance-based specifications. While this debate is not new, it remains highly relevant. For construction clients, it is always tempting to specify particular solutions—such as requesting a specific floor finish or HVAC system. This is often a form of 'uncertainty reduction behaviour,' aimed at minimizing the risk of not getting what they need. The problem is that such specifications can restrict a design team’s creativity. Focusing instead on performance enables more innovative solutions. That said, it’s important not to be overly rigid in insisting on performance-based requirements alone. Such requirements can sometimes feel abstract and complex, leading clients to feel uncertain about the final outcome, especially in Design & Build projects. Experienced clients, in particular, may prefer prescriptive specs, knowing from past experience what works and what doesn’t. In general, though, a strong project brief should focus on what the design needs to achieve, rather than dictating exactly how to achieve it. Today’s topics were: 🧮 Calculating quantities: with the improved quantities feature, you cannot only calculate square meters, but also capacities (e.g. bed capacity of a hospital, or parking capacity of an infrastructure project) and quantities of elements (e.g. power outlets, pump stations, seating, ….) 🫧 Creating diagrams: in our revamped diagram feature, you can now modify colours, shapes and positions, and save your diagrams. Of particular relevance for #adjacencydiagrams. We also discussed what’s in the pipeline for the rest of the year. Among other things: expanding our #IFC integration, a #risk register/log module, and the provision of #templates with standardized #properties and #objects. 👁️👁️Sneak preview of our renewed #diagramming feature: more controls for creating #adjacencydiagrams and #interfacediagrams for your projects! The renewed feature comes with more controls concerning shapes and colours, and with the possibility to save diagrams directly in your model. It works a bit like powerpoint or visio, but the big difference is that you are working directly with the data in your model. So, when making changes in e.g. the name or size of a space, all your diagrams are automatically updated. We plan to release this new feature in the coming weeks.
