The research infrastructure for language as social and cultural data

Over ons

CLARIN – or Common Language Resources and Technology Infrastructure– is a research infrastructure initiated from the vision that all digital language resources and tools from all over Europe and beyond are accessible through a single sign-on online environment for the support of researchers in the humanities and social sciences. The CLARIN infrastructure is governed and coordinated by CLARIN ERIC. An ERIC (European Research Infrastructure Consortium) is an international legal entity, established by the European Commission in 2009. CLARIN ERICs members are governments or intergovernmental organisations. Since 2012 several countries have joined either as full member, or as observer. The ultimate goal is to include all EU and associated countries as well as third countries in or outside Europe.

Last week, CLARIN.SI members traveled to Barcelona for the #CLARIN2024 annual conference. We were incredibly well represented, thanks to: 🌟 Tomaz Erjavec, CLARIN.SI national coordinator, presenting the achievements of our infrastructure over the past 10 years (➡ paper "CLARIN.SI, the Slovenian node of CLARIN: ten years on" (Erjavec et al.)); 🌟 Simon Krek, representing a new knowledge centre, CLARIN-ELEXIS Knowledge Centre for Lexicography; 🌟 Taja Kuzman and Nikola Ljubešić, showcasing the CLASSLA Knowledge Centre and the CLASSLA-Express workshop series (➡ paper "CLASSLA-Express: a Train of CLARIN.SI Workshops on Language Resources and Tools with Easily Expanding Route" (Ljubešić et al.)). They also presented the ParlaCAP project, focusing on enriching ParlaMint corpora with topic and sentiment metadata tailored for political science research. 🌟 Jakob Lenardič, sharing best practices for citing language resources (➡ paper "The citation of language resource technologies in CLARIN" (Lenardič and Pahor de Maiti Tekavčič)); 🌟 Kaja Dobrovoljc, presenting tools and services for exploring Slovenian dependency treebanks (➡ paper "Can’t See the Forest for the Trees: Tools and Services for Investigating Slovene Dependency Treebanks" (Dobrovoljc)); 🌟 Mateja Jemec Tomazin, contributing to the CLARIN Legal and Ethical Issues Committee (CLIC), which explained to us the legal implications of accessing language data for research under new EU regulations (➡ paper "New laws, new opportunities– the effect of the Digital Services Act and the Data Act on access to language data for research purposes" (Kamocki et al.)); 🌟 Katja Meden, presenting her ongoing PhD research at the PhD Poster Session. 🌟 A special shout-out to Simon Krek and Nikola Ljubešić for treating us to a fantastic musical performance during the conference dinner! 🎶 All papers are available in the conference proceedings: https://lnkd.in/gmk9C6xV Big thanks to CLARIN ERIC for the impeccable organization, beautiful location, delicious food, and, most importantly, creating a welcoming atmosphere that fosters international collaboration. We’re already looking forward to next year!

We are pleased to announce the two winners of the 2024 Steven Krauwer Awards 🎉 Jan Odijk has received the Steven Krauwer Award for CLARIN Achievements for his decades long work on bridging theoretical linguistics, computational methods, and language technology, and his involvement and leadership in numerous projects. Mikko Tolonen, Eetu Mäkelä, Jukka Suomela and Juoni Tuominen have received the award as organisers of the Helsinki Digital Humanities Hackathon. The Hackathon bridges the gap between computer science, data science, social science and the humanities, and provides a unique opportunity for researchers and students from various disciplines to come together and apply their abstract knowledge to solve complex real-life problems. The Steven Krauwer Awards, named after CLARIN's first Executive Director, are given annually to scientists or engineers in recognition of outstanding contributions toward CLARIN goals. Read the news item to learn more about the award & this year's winners!
