New report! 📄 The climate and biodiversity crises are inextricably linked – and are even more intertwined in the context of agriculture and food systems. A new policy paper – “Biodiversity and Climate Action in Agriculture and Food Systems: Opportunities for Building Synergies” – 1️⃣ explores connections between food, climate, and biodiversity, 2️⃣ explains how agriculture and food systems are integrated into international biodiversity and climate policy processes, and 3️⃣ outlines opportunities for aligning these efforts. Why do these intersections matter? The global food system is not only a significant contributor to greenhouse gas emissions, but also the leading driver of biodiversity loss. Food systems are also increasingly vulnerable to climate change impacts. The solution to these crises, however, also lies in the agriculture and food systems. A range of insights included in the paper emphasize the need for integrated, systemic solutions that tackle both the climate and biodiversity crises through more sustainable and resilient food systems. Consider that… ➡️ The overexploitation of natural resources in global food systems drives biodiversity loss and climate change through ecosystem conversion, habitat degradation and fragmentation, soil nutrient depletion, overfishing, and excessive water extraction. ➡️ Current food systems face three major societal challenges: unequal access to safe and nutritious food, disproportionate power dynamics, and the effects of environmental degradation on the most vulnerable parts of society. ➡️ Environmental pollution from food systems degrades water, air, and soils through nutrient runoff, pesticide drift, and toxic emissions, which harms ecosystems, biodiversity, and public health. ➡️ Transformed agriculture and food systems that embrace sustainable production and consumption patterns could feed more than 10 billion people while also benefiting both biodiversity and climate. Glad to have arrived at vibrant #COP16 in Cali. 💡Lots of insightful discussions happening, especially on how to #transform #food #systems so they protect #biodiversity instead of destroying it. But the way we produce, process, transport and consume food not only impacts biodiversity. It can also play heavily drive #climatechange depending on approaches chosen. 📣In the fall of the "3 COPs", tomorrow's event - 𝗛𝗮𝗿𝘃𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗦𝗼𝗹𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀: 𝗔𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗡𝗕𝗦𝗔𝗣𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗡𝗗𝗖𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗖𝗹𝗶𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗕𝗶𝗼𝗱𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗕𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗳𝗶𝘁𝘀 - on solutions to align both biodiversity and climate protection is more relevant than ever. 📍Join us at the 𝗖𝗚𝗜𝗔𝗥 𝗣𝗮𝘃𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗼𝗻 (COP16 blue zone) or online tomorrow 𝟮𝟱.𝟭𝟬 𝗮𝘁 𝟭𝟭:𝟯𝟬 𝗖𝗢𝗧 I'll have the pleasure to speak on the potential of agroecology and related policies to create coherence between both climate and biodiversity agendas, together with: - Lasse B. Food systems are a key driver of biodiversity loss, but they can also be a crucial lever for biodiversity conservation and restoration. With COP16 underway, the intersection between food systems and biodiversity is crucial to highlight. Here’s one important question: Do countries recognize the importance of sustainable food systems for meeting biodiversity goals? In a recently published report, Climate Focus and WWF conducted an analysis of National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans (#NBSAPs) submitted by Parties to the #GlobalBiodiversityFramework (GBF) to find out. The report – “Food Forward NBSAPs: Integrating Food Systems in National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans” – shows that while many countries are recognizing that food systems are a crucial part of progress towards the #GBFTargets, additional measures and implementation of these plans are needed. The report’s key messages include:➡️ 97% of 64 assessed NBSAPs and National Targets submissions include at least one measure related to agriculture and food systems. However, the coverage of food systems measures varies across NBSAPs and categories of measures. Of the 64 biodiversity plans – both NBSAPs (23 submissions) and National Targets (41 submissions) – submitted as of September 30, 2024: 🦋 58 included measures for nature-positive food production. 🌾 15 integrated measures focusing on food production, healthy and sustainable consumption, and food governance. 🌐 32 take a holistic food systems approach. These NBSAPs include targets and policy measures addressing nature-positive food production, food loss and waste reduction, the promotion of healthy and sustainable food consumption, as well as measures for inclusive and sustainable governance.
