HAPPY 10TH BIRTHDAY TO "GREEN GOLD 2: REGREENING THE PLANET"! 🥳 In 2012, ecosystem restoration expert and filmmaker John Dennis Liu released his first documentary of the series Green Gold: Regreening the Desert, showing people all over the world the potential of landscape restoration to solve the polycrisis we face 🌅 In 2014, 10 years ago this month, John released a sequel: Green Gold 2, looking at the gains to be made from restoring ecosystems in Spain, Egypt and India. John's work demonstrates that you can transform degraded areas into thriving landscapes. With the right techniques, and with enough people committed, we can restore the functioning of ecosystems and ensure local communities thrive. These documentary series have inspired people worldwide to quit their jobs and dedicate their lives to ecosystem restoration. For many, the experience put them on a path to turn anxiety about climate change and biodiversity loss towards a positive and actionable solution.. Let's celebrate the power of Green Gold 2! Thank you John Dennis Liu for your inspiring work! 💡 Do you remember the first time you saw Green Gold, and how it impacted you? DEAR COP16 POLICY ACTORS, CARING FOR NATURE IS NOT A COST - IT'S AN INVESTMENT IN OUR COLLECTIVE FUTURE 🌿 Thank you Debs Martin, Programme Manager at The Nature Conservancy in Aotearoa New Zealand and Kotahitanga mō te Taiao Alliance for sharing this powerful message during our Learning Summit back in April, when we asked our local landscape partners and experts: “What message would you send to the UN Convention of Biological Diversity (CBD) COP16 policy actors? Too often, restoration and conservation efforts are treated as optional, a “nice to have,” funded only when there’s a bit of “extra money.” This mindset is leading our society down the wrong path. Investing in nature is a vital investment in our collective future and the future of our children. We need to reframe caring for nature as an essential, long-term investment that builds resilience, strengthens economies, and protects our planet’s biodiversity. Prioritising nature should be done with pride, not seen as a burden to bear. Only then can we ensure a future where healthy landscapes support thriving communities. Do you agree? DEAR COP16 POLICY ACTORS, WE NEED HALF OF THE WORLD TO BECOME NATURE! 🌎🌍🌏 Thank you Esther Blom, Managing Director at ARK Rewilding Nederland for sharing this powerful message during our Learning Summit back in April, when we asked our local landscape partners and experts: “What message would you send to the UN Convention of Biological Diversity (CBD) COP16 policy actors? The Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework agreed last year at COP15 set a target to protect and restore 30% of the world’s land, waters and seas by 2030, but does this need to be 50%? Esther puts forward a bold vision, suggesting that to secure a living planet with healthy ecosystems, and resilient landscapes, we must set aside half of the Earth for nature. Esther highlights that diverse ecosystems, free from human interference, could help us stabilise our climate, preserving biodiversity, and maintaining the natural cycles that sustain life. 🏜️ On land, this would mean expanding protected areas and restoring degraded landscapes. 🌊 In our oceans, it would mean establishing more marine protected zones, supporting sustainable fisheries, and safeguarding coastal habitats. What do you think? At this year's biodiversity COP, is it time we officially designate 50% of the Earth to nature to give her the space to heal and renew? Just as landscapes can be degraded, they can also be restored and brought back to life! ✨ When we say “landscape restoration” we do not mean restoration to a past state. The landscape can never be the same again because humans and other life forms evolve and the interactions in the ecosystem are dynamic. Rather, we aim to restore the “functioning” of the landscape, meaning ecologically, socially, and economically, so that it is healthy and resilient to future changes. That’s why the term regeneration is often used. We want to transform the cycle of degradation into one of regeneration. A regenerative landscape aligns human activities with the landscape and its ecosystems. The goal is healthy landscapes that benefit all — nature, people, community, and business. 🌏💚 #LandscapeRestoration #RegenerativeAgriculture #EcosystemHealth #NatureConservation #HealthyEcosystems #Sustainability

DEAR COP16 POLICY ACTORS, LISTEN TO THE PEOPLE ON THE GROUND! 👂🏼🔉👩🏽🌾 Thank you Elvira Marín, Director of Fundación Aland, for sharing this powerful message during our Learning Summit back in April, when we asked our local landscape partners and experts: “What message would you send to the UN Convention of Biological Diversity (CBD) COP16 policy actors? As Elvira highlights, communities on the ground are the ones on the frontlines of dealing with biodiversity loss and climate change. We need to listen to their voices to solve the polycrisis we're facing. Local communities are the stewards of our landscapes, those constantly observing changes in soil health, plant behaviour, and ecosystem dynamics. They understand both the challenges and the solutions because they live and breathe them daily. The knowledge and wisdom of farmers, Indigenous communities, and local land stewards are invaluable. Their insights can shape realistic, and effective strategies for restoring our ecosystems. As Elvira says, please take the time to visit these landscapes, engage directly, and build policies that reflect the lived experiences of those at the heart of our ecosystems. Do you agree? 🌍 From promises to action: It’s time to turn commitments into reality. 🌱 At #COP16, the world will focus on how to implement the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework—moving beyond established targets to tangible action. For over 11 years, Commonland has put the principles of holistic landscape restoration into practice, turning theories into effective, people-centred solutions. 🛠️ We believe implementation means integrating nature and people. The 4 Returns Framework shows that when local and Indigenous communities restore landscapes, we can deliver for biodiversity, climate, and communities all at once. This is our message for #COP16: It’s time to scale what works, invest in inclusive landscape finance, and ensure that nature recovery is everyone’s priority. 📑 Read our full statement here: https://lnkd.in/esGJxD7Q 🔗 #NatureBasedSolutions #Biodiversity #ClimateAction #Restoration #COP16 #PeacewithNature #CaliColombia #PazconlaNaturaleza

DEAR COP16 POLICY ACTORS, FOCUS ON WHAT'S ACHIEVABLE FIRST! 🎯 Thank you Manisha Motwani, Community Mobiliser at Chhattisgarh Agricon Samiti for sharing this powerful message during our Learning Summit back in April, when we asked our local landscape partners and experts: “What message would you send to the UN Convention of Biological Diversity (CBD) COP16 policy actors? Manisha’s message is clear: we need goals that are achievable, visible, and set us up for long-term success. When we aim too high, too fast, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed and lose momentum. Do you agree that focusing on shorter-term targets will help us gain traction, both in tackling climate change and reversing biodiversity loss? 🦍 Tell us in the comments below! ⬇️ UN Biodiversity #Biodiversity #LandscapeRestoration #RegenerativeAgriculture #Sustainability #COP16 #Climatecrisis #Pazconlanaturaleza #peacewithnature
