Dear reader, It is the ‘last’ business week of the year. However, writing this first sentence feels a bit paradoxical. There are many people working in 24/7 industries who rarely experience this feeling of ‘rounding things up’. They work during Christmas and New Year’s Eve to ensure us that we can count on them, while we enjoy the holidays with our beloved ones. This matter brings me to the point of taking things for granted. Sometimes - and perhaps even more than we would like - we take things in life to granted for the sake of that ‘it is just the way it is’. When looking at those 24/7 industries there are a lot of misassumptions. For example, many people do not know, or only have a vague idea, what a data center is and what people are doing in these buildings (e.g., taking care of servers so everything is up and running). People have the tendency to believe that the Internet is ‘just there’. However, misassumptions like this increases the feeling of ignorance and - even worse - can potentially harm our life on the long term. Although Datacentered is ‘just a magazine’, I encourage you all to think about these people during the holidays while you watch a (new) serie on Netflix or any other streaming platform. I encourage you to think how important these silent heroes are. I wish you all the best for 2025. Kind regards, Pim Kokke

𝗡𝗼𝘄 𝗬𝗼𝘂 𝗦𝗲𝗲 𝗠𝗲 ⭐️ Are you going to be the person that people expect you to be? In the latest edition of Datacentered, you can read the full story of Emily van Putten who was interviewed by Melissa Scholten from Digital Realty. In this interview, Emily addresses her life story and career path in the data center and tech industry. “The outflow of women in the first 5 years is three times higher compared to men. Slowly attention is being paid to this fact, but not enough. Therefore, I also dare to say that if I had taken the same steps as a girl at the time, I would not have been at the same point in my career.” Curious about the entire interview? 𝘼𝙣𝙙 𝙣𝙤𝙬 𝙬𝙚 𝙖𝙧𝙚 𝙨𝙤𝙡𝙞𝙙 𝙖𝙨 𝙖 𝙧𝙤𝙘𝙠 💪🏼 Pionen was originally built as a civil defense center back in 1943 and later converted into a data center by Bahnhof AB (Publ). The data center opened on September 11, 2008 and remains operational to this day. The underground facility is secured by a 15.75-inch (40 cm) thick door and can withstand a hydrogen bomb! It also serves as a co-location center, notably used by WikiLeaks in 2010. Designed to resemble a science fiction set, it retains its Cold War name, Pionen White Mountains, and its features.
