Last week, D/DOCK's partner and CEO Coen Van Dijck took the stage to share the journey behind ’t Huys at De L'Europe Amsterdam, where 14 signature suites were co-designed with Amsterdam’s icons of art and style, redefining the concept of luxury hospitality. It was great to exchange thoughts with Mosanne Monod de Froideville on the relationship between hoteliers and designers, and how spaces can tell stories and bring people together. Thanks to Elisa Basili and the Independent Hotel Show Amsterdam team for making it happen, and to Gertrude van den Brink for guiding the conversation. AIR Offices Rotterdam is the perfect example of how to transform a single-use department store into a multi-use destination where offices, retail and events come together. Tenants include Unilever, Spaces. offices | co-working | meeting rooms., C&A, Jumbo Supermarkten, and the City of Rotterdam. And to top it all off, last week the building was used as event space for the fair of contemporary design OBJECT Rotterdam. Blurring the lines between indoors and outdoors, our work for AIR transforms the common areas of the building into dynamic hubs that encourage connection, creativity, and play. At the heart of the 23,300 sqm space, a central square reminiscent of an Italian piazza is flooded with light by the glass roof and high ceilings. Custom-made flooring, abundant greenery, and thoughtfully selected pedestal lamps bring the outdoor feeling indoors, creating an environment that supports flexible working and socialising. Pergolas draped in plants provide intimate spaces, while an organic grand stand disrupts the building’s rigid lines, offering a place to sit, meet, or enjoy lunch. The central playroom, with a pool table and foosball, invites tenants to unwind and recharge. The stairs guide visitors naturally to the first floor and diverse furniture typologies cater to various needs, creating a lively, flexible space. Every piece of fixed furniture is custom-made to serve its specific purpose while enhancing the building’s character. The rooftop bar completes the experience, offering a vibrant gathering space with panoramic views, extending the atmosphere of the building to the skyline. The building proudly holds the BREEAM Excellent certification and the WELL-Gold certification, promoting sustainability and the wellbeing of its users. Photography: Studio Hoge Heren B.V. 𝗙𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗟𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗹𝗼𝗿𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝗕𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗹𝗼𝗿𝗱 Students bring fresh ideas, curiosity, and a drive to challenge the status quo — exactly what’s needed to rethink the future of our industry. This week, we kicked off an exciting collaboration with 10 students from the Hotel Management School Maastricht. Over the next 20 weeks, they’ll explore how blended-use concepts can optimise revenue in both office buildings and hotels. To start, we welcomed them to DB55 and De L'Europe Amsterdam for hands-on insights into the power of blended spaces. Our collaboration with Hotel Management School Maastricht goes back years, but this is the first time we’re mentoring thesis students. Their challenge? Developing innovative business plans, which they’ll pitch to our entire team on July 7. Looking forward to seeing their take on blended-use spaces and the ideas they’ll bring to the table! #BlendedUse #HotelManagementSchoolMaastricht Kick de Man, Lotte Thijssen, Nemea Aurélie D., Nathalie Gorzawski, Diederick van Nispen tot Pannerden, Daan de Lint, Cecile Paardekooper, Gijs Pastoor, Noor Peters, Teun Romeijn, Geoff Marée, Rouaida Mahfouz, Luc Partouns, Federico Violato, Francesco Messori, Coen Van Dijck, and Thomas van Leeuwen.

What is the positive impact we want to see in the design world across 2025? Mix Interiors invited eight industry leaders, including D/DOCK's Partner Thomas van Leeuwen, to share their visions, ambitions, and insights on shaping the future of commercial interior design and architecture in the year ahead. “Designers have the unique ability to shape the future by merging creativity with social responsibility. At D/DOCK, we are addressing two critical challenges: elderly care and the housing shortage. It’s alarming that we still can’t provide proper care for the elderly or basic housing for many. Through innovative concepts, we aim to tackle these issues, inspire change and present actionable strategies to policymakers. By prioritising people’s needs and pushing the boundaries of design, we strive to create lasting positive impact. As we look toward 2025, our focus remains on creating solutions that are visually compelling while also ethical and transformative.” #MixInteriors #PositiveImpact2025

Teamwork makes the dream work. The Westend Bigband has been rehearsing in our studio every Wednesday evening for the past two years—a small but vibrant example of making the most of our space in many ways. Circl Movement and Notion Film & Animation made this great video about it. Next Thursday, 20 February, Thomas will talk about this topic at Pakhuis de Zwijger, in collaboration with ABN AMRO Bank N.V.'s Circl Movement. Ever heard of The Great Room? Designed to bring the family together, The Great Room is a vast multi-purpose space at the centre of a house. Located on the ground floor, it features an open floor plan that encourages connection, allowing people to engage with one another while attending to different tasks. Marriott recognised the potential of this space and introduced it into their hotels. The Great Room is a concept designed to enhance flexibility in the hotel's public areas by creating distinct zones within a multi-functional open plan. These adaptable spaces allow guests to meet, work in small groups, or take private moments, accommodating their personal needs, much like they would in their own home. As the Amsterdam Marriott Hotel continues to build on its identity, it further enhances its role as a vibrant destination where guests, locals, and city wanderers come together to work, relax, socialise, and celebrate. From the warm elegance of the Lobby and M Club Lounge to the vibrant energy of the Bar and Library, each zone feels like an extension of the guest room, offering a sense of residential comfort and familiarity. More than just hospitality, the front-of-house areas invite discovery, blending refined service with delightful surprises in an atmosphere that shifts effortlessly from a spirited daytime tone to an elegant, bustling evening vibe. The playful use of colour, bespoke furniture, and custom art breathes originality into every corner, while a rich palette of materials creates a sleek yet youthful energy. Each detail is thoughtfully designed to feel inviting and inherently sophisticated, cementing the Amsterdam Marriott Hotel as a true city landmark. #AmsterdamMarriottHotel #HospitalityDesign

Excited to see Het Parool highlight the renovation of The American Hotel today. It is an honour to work on this monumental icon at Leidseplein. Our design team took a modest approach, allowing the building and its rich history to take centre stage. We are happy to collaborate with Dalata Hotel Group and the ambitious and welcoming Clayton Hotels team, who are bringing new energy to the hotel while creating a meaningful place where business guests, tourists, and locals come together. https://lnkd.in/euqrZz8T
