🌍 Around the world, people from all walks of life are standing up to say NO to #DeepSeaMining. This growing global coalition of voices —including governments, scientists, human rights activists, businesses, Indigenous communities, and youth—recognizes that deep-sea mining has no place in a sustainable future and that a moratorium is urgently needed to prevent irreversible damage to our planet’s last untouched frontier. Deep Sea Conservation Coalition
Non-profitorganisaties
We want robust action to be taken to protect the ocean depths, their remarkable species and the secrets they hold.
Over ons
The Deep Sea Conservation Coalition (DSCC) comprises over 100 member organizations, from non-government organizations and fishers organizations to law and policy institutes worldwide, working together under the umbrella of the DSCC to protect vulnerable deep-sea ecosystems and safeguard long-term health, integrity and resilience of this crucial part of the ocean. In this time of converging biodiversity and climate crises, protecting the ocean – our planet’s life support system – is more critical than ever. The DSCC works to ensure the continued health and productivity of deep-sea habitats and species. Our top priority is the urgent closure of all vulnerable marine ecosystems (VMEs) of the deep sea to any form of exploitation. #DefendTheDeep / #DeepSea / #BottomTrawling / #SaveOurSeamounts / #DeepSeaMining / #SeabedMining / #Seamounts

As the 30th International Seabed Authority Council starts, we shine a light on the growing momentum for a moratorium on risky #DeepSeaMining. 🌍 900+ leading marine science & policy experts from over 70 countries have voiced their concerns about the destructive industry. The deep sea is one of the least understood ecosystems on Earth, with thousands of species yet to be discovered. A growing global coalition of voices —including governments, scientists, human rights activists, businesses, Indigenous communities, and youth—is urging leaders to #StopTheMachines. Join them! defendthedeep.org #ISA30 #DefendTheDeep

🚨 Next week, the International Seabed Authority (ISA) Council meeting begins where States will continue negotiations that may impact the future of our deep ocean. The deep sea is one of the least understood ecosystems on Earth, yet mining companies are pushing for large-scale mining without knowing the consequences. Scientists warn of irreversible damage to biodiversity and climate, while experts highlight minimal financial benefits beyond short-term profits for the industry. The risks are too great. We call on the ISA to: ⏸️ Adopt a moratorium until science proves no harm. ❌ Reject all mining applications. ⛔️ Halt the adoption of a reckless Mining Code. 🌊 Protect our ocean—our planet’s life support system. The world is watching. It’s time to #DefendTheDeep and #StopTheMachines. Take action: www.defendthedeep.org

📢 32 countries support protecting the deep sea from irreversible destruction by #DeepSeaMining. Momentum for a moratorium is at an all-time high! Who will be the next country to say NO? Urge your government now: defendthedeep.org/ The International Seabed Authority Council will meet next week in Jamaica. Will countries distinguish themselves as ocean champions and adopt a moratorium before it’s too late? #StopTheMachines

Dive into the depths of the sea and enjoy watching Tomopterids in action. Did you know that these pelagic worms are voracious predators, using their speed and agility to capture and consume a variety of midwater organisms? They also are one of a few organisms observed spewing yellow bioluminescent mucous, presumably to deter predators. There is still so much we don't know about the deep sea. Learn more about these fascinating worms. 📽️ MBARI https://lnkd.in/gjJPGJBh
It seems so effortless for some deep-sea creatures to follow Mark Twain’s counsel to dance like nobody’s watching. This segmented gossamer worm is a Tomopteris that lives its entire life in the Ocean’s Twilight Zone — experiencing neither sun nor seafloor. According to MBARI, they range in size from a few centimeters to over a foot in length, and these pelagic polychaetes possess the ability to spew yellow bioluminescent mucus, they suspect, to deter predators. This hypnotic dancer was spotted during ROV dive operations for our current #SESeamounts expedition. An international team on R/V Falkor (too) is working to describe understudied seamounts that are biodiversity hotspots off the coast of Chile. Their work will likely support critical protections for important area of our global Ocean. #twilightzone #polychaetes #deepsea #oceanexploration #rovsubastian #RVFalkorToo

2024 saw the change of leadership at the International Seabed Authority, Norway's pause on mining the Arctic and more countries joining the call for a moratorium or precautionary pause. In this episode of the "Speak Up for Blue" podcast, deep-sea ecologist and high seas policy expert, Dr. Andrew Thaler, discusses some of these significant developments in 2024 and advocates for a moratorium on #DeepSeaMining. #DefendTheDeep https://lnkd.in/eKfdRhFp

Shallow seamounts serve as prey-rich oases for sharks, tuna, and other predators in marine reserves. A recent study highlights seamounts as key conservation targets in large marine protected areas. The research focused on three seamounts near Ascension Island, uncovering why these locations serve as prime gathering spots for predators. Dr Sam Weber from the University of Exeter explains: “This research also offers fundamental insights into seamounts’ role as activity hubs and oases for marine species and shows how these remarkable habitats influence the oceans that surround them.” Seamounts are #OceanLifelines - this latest study highlights more ways that seamounts support ocean life, from the deep sea to the surface. https://lnkd.in/evjVh_K8
