Seamounts support the health of the ocean – they are our #OceanLifelines. But these underwater mountains are under threat from #BottomTrawling. This practice has caused long term and ongoing destruction. How is the DSCC working to #ProtectSeamounts and other vulnerable marine ecosystems in the deep. Learn here 👉 https://lnkd.in/eNJmZNh8

We want robust action to be taken to protect the ocean depths, their remarkable species and the secrets they hold.
Over ons
The Deep Sea Conservation Coalition (DSCC) comprises over 100 member organizations, from non-government organizations and fishers organizations to law and policy institutes worldwide, working together under the umbrella of the DSCC to protect vulnerable deep-sea ecosystems and safeguard long-term health, integrity and resilience of this crucial part of the ocean. In this time of converging biodiversity and climate crises, protecting the ocean – our planet’s life support system – is more critical than ever. The DSCC works to ensure the continued health and productivity of deep-sea habitats and species. Our top priority is the urgent closure of all vulnerable marine ecosystems (VMEs) of the deep sea to any form of exploitation. #DefendTheDeep / #DeepSea / #BottomTrawling / #SaveOurSeamounts / #DeepSeaMining / #SeabedMining / #Seamounts

Fantastic to join a group of passionate policymakers and ocean experts at the European Parliament in #Brussels for an event dedicated to #ecocidelaw and the ocean! 🪸🐬🐠 From the world of ocean conservation we were joined by Simon Holmström, Deep Sea Mining Policy Officer at Seas At Risk Farah Obaidullah ocean advocate and Founder of The Ocean and Us and Matthew Gianni of the Deep Sea Conservation Coalition (DSCC). Two Members of the European Parliament also took part - Isabella Lövin, MEP for Sweden’s Green Party, and Emma Fourreau, MEP for France’s LFI party! Thank you Gallifrey Foundation and Seas At Risk for co-organising! Do you work with the ocean? Do you agree that it should be a criminal offence to inflict mass harm on ocean ecosystems? You can take action today by adding your name to our ocean open letter! 🌊 https://lnkd.in/eEDhDVYn You can also read our latest guest blog about ecocide law and the ocean: https://lnkd.in/dN9cGB9Q #StopEcocide

🌍 𝐂𝐫𝐢𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐄𝐜𝐨𝐜𝐢𝐝𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐒𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐎𝐮𝐫 𝐎𝐜𝐞𝐚𝐧 🌊 Today, I attended the inspiring event, "Criminalising Ecocide to Save Our Ocean," at the European Parliament! The engaging discussions centred on how ecocide law could transition from an idea to tangible action, particularly with the upcoming 𝐄𝐔 𝐄𝐧𝐯𝐢𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐥 𝐂𝐫𝐢𝐦𝐞𝐬 𝐃𝐢𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 and a 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐩𝐨𝐬𝐚𝐥 𝐭𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞𝐝 𝐚𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞 International Criminal Court by Vanuatu, Fiji, and Samoa. Our oceans, which cover over 70% of the Earth’s surface, face unprecedented challenges. From overfishing and plastic pollution to oil spills and the destruction of deep-sea biodiversity, marine ecosystems are on the brink of collapse. Despite their critical importance for life on Earth, the 𝐥𝐞𝐠𝐚𝐥 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐭𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 for our oceans remain 𝐚𝐥𝐚𝐫𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐥𝐲 𝐢𝐧𝐬𝐮𝐟𝐟𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐭. 𝐓𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐢𝐬 𝐰𝐡𝐲 𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐜𝐢𝐝𝐞 𝐥𝐚𝐰 𝐢𝐬 𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐚𝐥! Recognising ecocide as an international crime could revolutionise marine conservation efforts. By holding decision-makers 𝐚𝐜𝐜𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 for the large-scale destruction of ecosystems, we can address the root causes of ocean degradation. This law would establish a 𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐚𝐥 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐥𝐞𝐠𝐚𝐥 𝐟𝐫𝐚𝐦𝐞𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤 𝐭𝐨 𝐝𝐞𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐟𝐮𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐩𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐞𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐦 𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐨𝐜𝐞𝐚𝐧𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐝𝐞𝐩𝐞𝐧𝐝 𝐨𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐦, ensuring their protection for 𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐟𝐮𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐠𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬. A special thank you to: 👉 Emma Fourreau, MEP for France’s LFI party 👉 Simon Holmström of Seas At Risk 👉 Isabella Lövin, MEP for Sweden’s Green Party 👉 Matthew Gianni of the Deep Sea Conservation Coalition (DSCC) 👉 Farah Obaidullah of The Ocean and Us 👉 Sue Miller of Stop Ecocide International for this inspiring conversation! 📸 ©Tiago Pires da Cruz

📆 This Thursday 3 October, proudly co-organised by Gallifrey! Whether you're in Brussels for #OceanWeek or not, make sure to make time for this most insightful panel on Criminalising Ecocide To Save Our Ocean! ⏲️ 14:00-15:30 CEST 🔗 Register at https://lnkd.in/edky7taf 💻 Watch live on https://lnkd.in/dNGqptcG "Ecocide? Like in genocide, homicide, etc.? 🤔" Yep. But applied to the environment and for the ocean. Check it out 👇 🌊 The ocean, covering over 70% of the Earth’s surface, is essential for life, regulating the climate, producing oxygen, and supporting 80% of life on this planet. However, it faces escalating threats from pollution, deep-sea mining, overfishing, habitat destruction, and climate change. This event will delve into how criminalising ecocide—defined as the large-scale destruction of ecosystems—could serve as a powerful legal mechanism to combat these threats. With the EU already recognising comparable offences under the revised Environmental Crimes Directive, we will explore how ecocide laws could deter harmful practices and safeguard marine environments. Come and meet top-notch speakers: MEP Emma Fourreau MEP Isabella Lövin Matthew Gianni, Deep Sea Conservation Coalition (DSCC) Sue Miller, Stop Ecocide International Farah Obaidullah, The Ocean and Us Simon Holmström, Seas At Risk #Ecocide #EcocideLaw #DeepSeabedMining #Ocean #OceanWeek #Pollution #Overfishing

Victor L. Vescovo writes for Economist Impact's World Ocean Initiative on how the new secretary-general of the International Seabed Authority can bring more transparency to the organisation by adopting a new approach to assess the merits of deep-sea mining (DSM). He challenges the narrative that DSM is a necessary and profitable industry, and calls for a more thorough examination of its financial and technological feasibility. Threats to the deep sea such as #BottomTrawling on seamounts and #DeepSeaMining continue to grow. After 20 years of international commitments, the time for action is now. The deep-sea environment is not just critical to the health of the ocean’s wider food web, but also to the climate system by keeping enormous amounts of heat-trapping gasses out of the atmosphere in a process known as the carbon pump. Also, as recently discovered, “dark oxygen” can be generated by the nodules that mining companies want to extract from the seabed. Palau President, Surangel S. Whipps Jr., and former New Zealand Prime Minister, Office of Rt. Hon. Helen Clark reflect on the urgent need for protection of deep-sea ecosystems and biodiversity. #DefendTheDeep https://lnkd.in/e4vuXzWV
