🙌 Congratulations to our colleague Roshanka Ranasinghe, who has been appointed to an expert group that will determine the scope of an upcoming IPCC report! Rosh: “As a scoping team member, I will be able to play a role in highlighting the key climate change challenges faced by the world, assessing adaptation measures, and providing insights as to where we are in terms of climate mitigation, and much more.” Along with 5 other experts based in the Netherlands, Rosh will work with scientists from around the world as part of the scoping team for three IPCC Seventh Assessment Report (AR7) working groups. The team’s members were selected from over 1,000 nominations put forth by governments.   Rosh will join the working group focusing on the physical science basis of climate change. The IPCC Assessment Reports ensure decision-makers have the scientific evidence they need to take informed decisions on climate policy, so we can keep the Paris Agreement goals alive.    #EnablingDeltaLife #IPCC ##AssessmentReport #ClimateChange

😃 We are excited to host the 5th European Conference on Physical Modelling in Geotechnics (#ECPMG 2024) on our campus in Delft, in collaboration with the Geo-Engineering section of the TU Delft Department of Geoscience and Engineering, and under the auspices of ISSMGE TC104 - Physical Modelling in Geotechnics. Suzanne van Eekelen of Deltares and Miguel Angel Cabrera Cabrera of Delft University of Technology are hosting the conference. The conference will take place from 2 - 4 October, and aims to provide insights into the latest advancements in multi-scale physical modelling across the following themes: - Scaling principles and fundamentals - New facilities, equipment, and measuring techniques - Onshore and offshore foundation systems - Geotechnical infrastructure - Energy geo-structures and climate effects 👋 We are proud to welcome 140 delegates from 28 countries to the Deltares campus. 🛥️Hoe maken we onze waterwegen en bijbehorende infrastructuur geschikt voor de toekomst? Veranderingen in de binnenvaart vragen om nieuwe ontwerpen voor bijvoorbeeld sluizen, om ze beter bestand te maken tegen aanvaringen. Deltares brengt in de sluis van Sambeek de vaarsnelheden van binnenvaartschepen in kaart voor Rijkswaterstaat, die daarmee ontwerpeisen kan aanpassen.   💧In de stromende regen sjouwen Deltares-onderzoekers Migena Zagonjolli, Jelle Molenaar en Dennis Peters meetapparatuur naar de voorhaven van de sluis van Sambeek. Langs de oostelijke kade plaatsen ze lasers in waterdichte kastjes en kabels om de snelheid van passerende binnenvaartschepen vast te leggen.   🎯Het doel: sluizen, stuwen en andere zogenaamde natte kunstwerken beter bestand te maken tegen aanvaringen. Migena Zagonjolli, onderzoeker Rivierkunde en Binnenvaart bij Deltares vertelt: “De metingen van vaarsnelheden zijn in de jaren negentig voor het laatst gedaan. Sinds die tijd is de vloot veranderd. Binnenvaartschepen zijn bijvoorbeeld groter en sneller geworden.”   🔬Vroeger maakten medewerkers van Rijkswaterstaat lange dagen langs de sluizen om informatie te krijgen over de snelheid van passerende schepen. Daar heeft Deltares nu een geautomatiseerd meetsysteem voor ontworpen. Migena licht toe: “Drie sets van twee lasers meten op vaste locaties langs de kade in de voorhaven het tijdstip waarop een schip de laser passeert en registreren dit meteen in een tekstbestand. De apparatuur krijgt stroom via een zonnepaneel. Deze meetmethode bespaart tijd en geld.” 🗺️Bij veldwerk loopt het altijd iets anders dan je vooraf denkt. Migena: “Jammer, maar het hoort erbij, bepaalde omgevingsfactoren krijg je namelijk niet mee achter je bureau. Pas als je op de plek zelf bent, krijg je een goed overzicht. Veldwerk geeft je als onderzoeker meer gevoel voor je onderwerp. 🐘 Houdt olifantsgras van natte voeten? En helpt het verbouwen van dit gewas tegen bodemdaling, veenafbraak en daarmee #broeikasgasuitstoot? Op deze vragen hopen Deltares-onderzoekers Siem Jansen en Jesse Reusen antwoorden te vinden in een weiland in het Zuid-Hollandse Zegveld. 📏 Tussen de koeien en het manshoge gras controleren ze de 6 meetpunten die ze in dit perceel hebben aangebracht. De metingen moeten aantonen of olifantsgras inderdaad goed gedijt bij een hoge grondwaterstand en of het daarmee een effectieve maatregel is tegen veenafbraak. 🔋 5 x per jaar reizen ze naar Zegveld af, om de meetapparatuur te controleren en data op te halen. Vandaag vervangt Siem de batterijen van de loggers, die in de peilbuizen de grondwaterstand meten, op verschillende afstanden van de sloot. Met een meetlint checkt hij of de loggers de juiste informatie ophalen. Ook meten Jesse en hij met bodemvochtsensoren hoe nat de bodem is en houden ze de bodemtemperatuur bij. Dat laatste is belangrijk om de hoeveelheid afbraakomstandigheden vast te stellen.  ⚪ Siem en Jesse kijken even verderop op de proefboerderij bij de bollen of ‘kamers’ die de uitstoot van broeikasgassen meten, een onderzoek van collega’s. “Het leuke aan veldwerk is dat je met eigen ogen ziet hoe de data die je later gebruikt is opgehaald”, vindt Siem. 🔗 “Veldwerk zorgt voor connectie tussen de digitale en de fysieke wereld, voor begrip van de processen die je onderzoekt. Kennis van de samenhang in het water- en bodemsysteem krijg je pas echt in het veld. En je ziet dat de werkelijkheid veel complexer is, met allerlei onzekerheden om rekening mee te houden. De truc is om in die complexiteit nieuwe onderzoeksvragen te formuleren en te onthouden wat je ook alweer onderzocht. Omdat je zoveel meet, kun je ook snel afdwalen.
