𝐏𝐲𝐫𝐨𝐥𝐲𝐬𝐢𝐬 𝐨𝐢𝐥 Welcome to the second instalment of our #FuelFlexible series, where we explore innovative energy solutions. Today, we focus on pyrolysis oil — a synthetic fuel produced from waste materials such as used tires, plastic, and wood by heating them without oxygen at high temperatures. This renewable fuel is a promising substitute for petroleum and can be utilized in various industrial applications. Despite its potential, it does pose some challenges; however, the OP16 gas turbine transforms them into new possibilities. What are the challenges? Pyrolysis oil has distinct properties compared to conventional fossil fuels, including higher viscosity, increased water content, and lower heating value. These characteristics necessitate different fuel handling procedures and pre-treatment before the oil can be effectively used. To operate gas turbines with pyrolysis oil, two key requirements must be met: an advanced combustion system capable of efficiently burning the oil, and the flexibility to switch between pyrolysis oil and conventional fuels to ensure reliability. This is where the OP16 gas turbine exels. It is designed to handle a wide range of fuels with both high and low calorific values. The dual-fuel capability of OP16 allows the turbine to operate on or switch seamlessly between different fuels, even under full load. This versatility makes the OP16 a powerful tool in the transition to more sustainable energy sources. Stay tuned for more insights in our #FuelFlexible series, as we continue to explore the future of energy.

Recently we received our first Liquid Hydrogen Storage tank, custom-designed and built specifically for Destinus, along with our first Liquid Nitrogen Tank🔽 “This is an exciting moment for our team, as we are closer than ever to seeing our Liquid Hydrogen test facility come online for propulsion testing. It’s a significant step towards revolutionizing sustainable hydrogen-powered technologies and unlocking full hydrogen potential" says Michael McGrath. Located in Payerne, Switzerland, Destinus H2 Park will be equipped to conduct tests using gaseous hydrogen and oxygen, liquid hydrogen and nitrogen, as well as conventional kerosene. The testing facility will handle 50 kN motors with a flow rate of 0.5 kg/s for both liquid hydrogen and nitrogen under controlled conditions (regulated pressure, temperature, and flow rate). We are on track to begin gas system testing by Q3 2024, with liquid system testing slated for Q3 2025. At Destinus Energy, we constantly highlight the hidden value and potential of waste, that a lot of time is overlooked. So, starting this week, we invite you to join us on this journey and learn more about how waste can be transformed into a powerhouse of energy and fuel for the future using the OP16 gas turbine. Please tag along with our series of posts (marked with the #FuelFlexible hashtag)! If you want some spoilers, you can always check our website to find out how waste can be turned into new opportunities: https://lnkd.in/eBChzvzc 𝐒𝐲𝐧𝐠𝐚𝐬 In our first #FuelFlexible series, we want to talk about synthetic gas, or syngas. This is a low-calorific fuel produced through the gasification of carbon-contained materials, such as municipal waste, plastic, coal, or wood. While syngas can be used to produce power, it also creates a lot of challenges, which are successfully addressed by the OP16 gas turbine. So what are these challenges? First, the fuel composition of syngas varies depending on the waste content. Second, since this kind of fuel is low calorific, its composition fluctuates over time, interfering with gas turbine performance. That makes syngas a desirable but difficult source to derive power from. The high fuel flexibility of the OP16 gas turbine allows for the utilization of low-calorific fuels, even if the composition fluctuates over time. Synthetic gases of different compositions can also be utilized, given its capability to effectively use the energy content of such gases. The OP16 gas turbine is well-prepared for waste gas utilization, offering a solution to harness readily available energy sources for your process energy requirements. As a result, total power output might be increased and the use of all available energy sources optimized.
