🌊 Policy makers and local stakeholders provided their key considerations for multi-source offshore renewable energy parks at this years’ EU-SCORES Policy Summit and the Local Stakeholder Event in Belgium at the beginning of July. 📣 The first 3 considerations were drawn from the EU-SCORES Policy Summit, which included contributions from the European Commission, national policymakers, and representatives from grid operators and universities: 1. Grid Planning: Emphasis on planning grid capacity based on potential future rather than the current demand. 2. Regulatory Frameworks: Importance of clear and coherent policies to balance various interests in marine space. 3. Research and Innovation: The need for continuous research to understand ecosystem impacts and to keep innovating in the field of offshore renewable energy technologies. 📣 The following 3 considerations can be drawn from the Local Stakeholder Event in Ostend: 1. Stakeholder engagement: Identify the key stakeholder groups and build trust through transparent & fact-centred communication. 2. Varied challenges: Challenges of multi-source energy parks include the optimal site selection, managing potential environmental impacts and supply chain issues. 3. Win-wins of multi-source energy parks: Less space necessary to achieve renewable energy targets, as multi-source parks can generate more energy in the same area, leaving more space for other activities. Prior to the Local Stakeholder Event, the project partners also had the opportunity to visit Oceans of Energy’s NS3 offshore solar demonstrator at the Blue Accelerator - Maritime Innovation and Development Platform, Ostend. A heartfelt thank you to all the speakers, project partners and audience for contributing to the discussion! To help restore European native flat oysters in the North Sea, our team recently collaborated with BESE-products and created tiny reefs to kickstart this keystone species. In the North Sea, where oyster reefs used to cover 20 to 30% of the seabed, the European native oyster is now considered functionally extinct. As a keystone species, oyster reefs enhance biodiversity by providing a home for many animals and plants, as well as playing a vital role in improving water quality by acting as a filter. We are very excited that last week our tiny reefs were placed out at the North Sea in Zeeland. Here, they will provide a home for oysters, and together with the many other tiny reefs, create a flourishing oyster reef. A healthy oyster reef can host up to 300 other marine species. BESE-products tiny reefs possess a unique biodegrading property that releases settlement cues for oyster larvae, facilitating their settlement. As the material biodegrades, only the oysters remain. Thank you BESE for sharing your insights on ecosystem- and oyster restoration and for providing us with the opportunity to place the tiny reefs. 👉 Stay tuned for the first footage of the reef, which will follow soon! 🐟 As an accelerator for offshore renewable energy solutions, we place high importance on restoring, offsetting and enhancing ecosystems when developing projects. Congratulations to both consortia Noordzeker and #Zeevonk for winning the largest offshore wind tenders so far in The Netherlands, and for including offshore solar, hydrogen production and nature-inclusive design in your IJmuiden Ver parks! Wind parks IJmuiden Ver Alpha & Beta combined will have the capacity to green 14% of the current Dutch electricity demand. In the parks, major steps will be made in combining offshore renewable energy technologies and nature-inclusive design: 🐟 IJmuiden Ver Alpha (won by Noordzeker) with an emphasis on ecology, will focus on protecting and strengthening nature in the North Sea with nature-inclusive design solutions in the fields of 1) bird monitoring 2) reducing impact on marine mammals 3) artificial reefs 4) removing waste within the park. Pensioenfonds ABP, APG, SSE Renewables Naturalis Biodiversity Center 🔆 IJmuiden Ver Beta (won by #Zeevonk) with en emphasis on system integration, will include - next to the 2GW offshore wind farm - a 50MWp offshore solar park and a 1GW hydrogen factory. Vattenfall Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners Great to see that the auction design for the tenders included non-price criteria on biodiversity protection and system integration. Looking forward to the further development of these multi-source parks! 📷 Image: Netherlands Enterprise Agency #IJmuidenVer #energytransition #ofshoresolar #hydrogen #natureinclusive
