Today Sjoerd Zwart (VDL-ETG) and Wytse Oortwijn Oortwijn (TNO-ESI) gave a presentation at the Bits&Chips Event 2024 on Synthesis-Based Engineering (SBE), and explained how SBE helps to manage the high complexity of developing correct supervisory controllers. If you’d like to get involved or discuss how SBE could help you, please contact us. #SBE #innovation #hightech VDL Groep TNO Bits&Chips

Managing complexity. Addressing the challenges of increasingly complex high-tech systems
Over ons
TNO-ESI is a Dutch Joint Innovation Centre of industry, academia and TNO for high-tech embedded systems design and engineering. It has a close cooperation with high-tech industry, as well as a strong association with fundamental research of academia, both national and international and TNO. ESI contributes to society and economy by driving advances in high-tech systems technology, with a strong shared research program, dedicated innovation support, a focused competence development program, and various knowledge- and experience-sharing activities. To be leading in high-tech product innovation, industry requires latest embedded system engineering capabilities and skills. It is here that TNO-ESI comes in, partnering in the development and deployment of strategic knowledge for design and engineering of complex high-tech systems and applications. RESEARCH TNO-ESI's strategic shared research program addresses latest technologies for design and engineering of high-tech embedded systems. By acting as research partner, bridge and integrator, we bring together multi-disciplinary teams of academic and industrial experts to drive future high-tech solutions. COMPETENCE DEVELOPMENT Innovation- and design strategy are key topics for any high-tech company. Realization of these topics requires technical top talent with in-depth understanding of the challenges and needs of today’s high-tech product innovation. Our training programs support the participants in developing their architectural and overall professional competencies.

Today, I've enjoyed the great representation of TNO-ESI at Bits&Chips event by Rosilde Corvino, Nan Yang, Wytse Oortwijn, Sezen Acur, and Bram van der Sanden. The common thread among all of our talks was understanding the industry challenges and working out implimentable solutions using techniques ranging from genAI to synthesis-based engineering, to model-based systems engineering.

We can increase the impact of LLM by using graph databases, which are made by our Renaissance tooling. This enables us to answer dependency questions for various code analysis activities such as change impact analysis says Nan Yang TNO
Now speaking at the Bits&Chips event in Eindhoven-Best: Nan Yang of TNO-ESI on using LLMs for refactoring legacy code, work ongoing with Philips . At the start she already shared the main conclusion: LLMs can help but need to be combined with other more conventional, model-based techniques to be effective.

Struggling to understand legacy code in your projects? Looking for a way to combine the best of AI and traditional software analysis tools? We are excited to present a new approach that we're developing at TNO-ESI to tackle these challenges in the high-tech industry. Legacy code is notoriously difficult to maintain, but it’s essential to the operation of complex systems. Traditional static analysis tools provide reliable insights but require deep, domain-specific knowledge. Meanwhile, Large Language Models (LLMs) are user-friendly but lack precise, in-depth understanding of codebases. The hybrid method that we are developing aims to bridge this gap by integrating static analysis with LLMs. We extract detailed code insights into a graph database, allowing LLMs to deliver accurate, natural language responses. This approach not only enhances the accuracy of LLMs but also brings a new level of abstraction and user-friendliness to static analysis. Eager to learn more? Join us at the Bits&Chips event on October 10th, in the Software Rejuvenation session from 11:45 to 12:25, to explore our hybrid solution. Do you still develop supervisory controllers by hand?! Wytse Oortwijn (TNO-ESI) and Sjoerd Zwart (VDL-ETG) will introduce Synthesis-Based Engineering (SBE), which helps to manage the high complexity of developing supervisory controllers. With SBE, correct-by-construction supervisory controllers can automatically be computed based on requirement specifications of WHAT the system should do. These are typically much easier to specify than having to work out HOW the system should realize its requirements in every possible situation, as is done traditionally. SBE may therefore help to realize better quality controllers at reduced effort and cost. We are currently investigating the application of SBE at ASML and VDL-ETG. Eager to learn more? Join us at the Bits&Chips event on October 10th, in the Engineering Automation track, from 14:30 to 15:10. #SBE #innovation #hightech VDL Groep TNO ASML
